Ok so I went and had to get a replacment eris and i rooted it to white widow, te track ball is messing up and I wanted to unroot. I ran the RUU and it keeps giving me the same error message about needing to get a more up to date ruu but I have the most recent.

What can I do?

I would like to add I had rooted my eris before and I was able to unroot just by running ruu with no prob. When I got the new phone I did make the mistake of not making a nanback up of the stock would that make a diffrence?

Ok the error I get says

"BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR

Th ROM update utility canot update your android phone please get the correct ROM utility and try again.

Any thoughts?

The RUU you should be using is named

RUU_Desire_C_WWE_2.36.605.1_release_signed_with_driver.exe

( 130,323,038 bytes; md5: 74035b1685b279b1aa4f17fafdbec78b )

If that's what you are using, and it's not working, try installing the Leak V3 ROM using the HBOOT PB00IMG.ZIP installation method.

If that doesn't work, have a look at this method by jcase on XDA and then repeat the application of the RUU - or the PB00IMG.ZIP
