Root Can't Update Bionic, it's rooted!!!

It's simple.
I can't update the Bionic.
It's rooted. Vers. 5.9.905
I Haven't removed anything.
I only have emulators installed.
I received a notice to update,
but I can't update because it fails all the time.

My questions are as follow...
How can I update?
Will I loose root?
Should I update?
If I do so, can I re-root?
Should I un-root, update, then re-root?

Someone please help, it's driving me nuts!

I moved your question to All Things Root.

My GUESS is that you have some apps frozen and Will need to un-freeze them for the update to occur.

Is the update an OTA update?

If so, it's failing because it needs the stock recovery to install the update, thus meaning that the custom recovery is causing the install to error out.

If you do want to take the OTA, an un root would let you install it.

As far as re rooting goes, you may want to read up on the most up to date guide to see if you can use that to re root.

If not, you'll have to wait until a method for the update is produced.

Since it is recommended to do a factory data reset when go from GB to ICS I would follow the steps in my signature for flashing 6.7.246 (do not use the modified). It will get you on ICS and do the factory data reset in one shot. Once you sign in to your google account let the play store restore all of your apps not a back up app.

Ok, so here's an update, I un-rooted, did a factory reset (erased everything)
and I still can't update (yes, it's OTA). Any ideas? Nothing was ever frozen, removed.

The error I'm getting is "Update Failed".
First, the update downloads, then I press install, the phone reboots and I get a message that says "Update Failed" and it does that over and over.
The version I'm trying to get is 6.7.246 which is the one that comes up after I check for updates.

OK. When you go to 6.7.246 that is ICS it is recommended to do a factory data reset. Since you are having issue updating through your phone you need to follow the directions in the thread I posted earlier. When you do it don't use the modified 6.7.246 but use the full 6.7.246

Well I finally have my phone update. Although the guide said it would wipe everything except for my sd card, it got wiped as well. Oh well, thanks for the help.

Well the external sd card was wiped too, lost all my pictures, videos, and all of the data from several apps that was not synced (or did not have the option to sync and/or backup)

That should not happen. It is only written to wipe internal. There is no command for an external wipe. I will check it out.

Update. I just went through the command list and wiping the external sd card is not there. Did you do and fdr before using rsdlite. When doing an fdr wiping the external sd is an option.

All I did was do a factory reset. It erased everything after I un-rooted the phone, not the ex-sd card (it still had all my pictures and stuff in it). AFTER I forced the update, the ex-sd card was wiped clean.

When you perform an FDR it asks you if you want to erase storage or not.

The update does not touch the data partitions at all, nor the SDCard.

Well then the ex-sd card was wiped magically because it remains erased, a process that I found out occurred after the phone booted up.

Based on the replies, everyone just thinks I wiped the sd card by accident but it's not like that, I'm simply just pointing out what happened to me after I applied the update manually.

On a side note, I received a prompt for another update, which this time was able to install itself on it's own without any problems.

It's no longer rooted, it doesn't matter anyways since the sd card is wiped.
I'll remember next time to take it out before I try any update.
