Can't update from Android 2.2

Hi all, I bought a unlocked LG-E720b (Canada) so I could play around without having a provider. What I wanted to do was update to a newer version of Android. I downloaded the LG programs, plugged my phone into the PC and everything went swimmingly. My phone has an update, so I click ok to proceed and a program called LG mobile support tool starts up and tells me I have the latest version for my phone. So one LG program says I need an update, the next says I don't.

I tried the phones setting/about/update and despite being connected to wifi, I get connection failed.

Any idea's how this noob can get Android updated on this phone.

Thanks

I guess I'm rooting then. Any suggestions for a dummy proof guide for this particular phone?

Thanks
welcome to AF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so you picked and older device so getting any of latest android os's to work on it is very iffy at best. now there might be a way to root it, but the dev community is non existent and thus you will not be able to find any custom roms out there.

i did see something about rooting it, but it definitely was not a guide by any stretch.

at this point i do not see that you can do anything other then get a new phone:p

I bought this old rebfurb in the hopes of downloading MagicJack app and a few others in an attempt to prove to my kids you don't need a carrier (my real phone is a an Ericson Arc). MJ use to have a version of its app that worked on 2.2 but I can't seem to find it anywhere so I had to get his old beast up to Android 2.6 or better if I want to carry on. Can't believe I shelled out a $100 for this dino just because it was unlocked. LOL

wow!!!! sorry to hear that. try and sell it and then use the money to buy the htc evo. in fact we have a member selling it as well: http://androidforums.com/classifieds/694472-sale-60-00-sprint-evo4g.html

i can speak from experience that the htc evo is an amazing piece of hardware. it can run froyo all the way up to ICS and even JB, if you root the phone. i still have mine that i use primarily as an mp3 player.

they even make an ICS mp3 player rom where the radios (3g and cellular) are turned off. it is very cool.

i'd send him a pm, if you are interested.

If you want an old phone to play with, that has ROMs up to JB , the HTC Wildfire S is a good cheap option. there's still quite a bit of active dev support over on XDA.

OK I rooted the phone using "One Click Root" and it worked. talk about dummy proof! But the new problem is I have found a set up (rom/flash/recovery/etc) for this phone, but no matter what I do, I cannot get this stupid thing to boot up in recovery mode. I even tried using "connect bot" for simplicity and no luck. Anyone have any ideas? I know its like beating a dead horse, but I bought it and was told it was useless, now I can't let it go. LOL I have to make it work.

persistent aren't we?:p

well you can try an app called Quick Boot (Reboot). now you can just use the app to boot into recovery.

It reboots normally (but slower), brings me to the screen where I swipe the phone and I have a factory reset essentially. All programs are lost and the icons are stock. When I hook the phone up to the computer I see all the programs I used are still on the phone, but not visible.

ok so i'm not very familiar with LG phones so i can't be of much help, but i'm not sure you have recovery. i have never used one click to root phones before and it seems that it does not provide a recovery.

and i have not seen a custom recovery for your phone.
