Help can't update Samsung galaxy s4

Flashing stock firmware should not wipe any files. However, as with any flashing process, you should take steps to back everything up, as per #2.1 of S4 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide

An 8GB micro SD card will cost around 4 or 5$. Well worth it.
 
Seriously? $20? Check the size. That price usually runs for the 32GB SD cards. You only need one around 8GB size. That should be cheaper.
 
Honestly at this point I would simply factory reset and try to do the OTA. Worse thing that could happen....you start over and have to redownload all of your apps. I have a friend that's on AT&T that tried the OTA 6 times before it finally went through uninterrupted. If you having this much trouble location the update online and kies won't let you update I definitely wouldn't do anything I found online cause your bound to screw something up. Be patient and keep trying the OTA. It'll go through eventually. Your gonna have to factory reset anyways once you get the OTA because of the problems your gonna run into with the update.

Will the O.P. be able to download the AT&T OTA updates if they are no longer on the AT&T network in Mexico?

I don't see why not. I've gotten updates on phones that are no longer in service just using them with WiFi. If I was him I wouldn't do anything else other try to OTA. Seems like he's having nothing but issues trying to find an update. And I personally think when he does get an update he'll be asking how to remove it. There's been a lot of issues with the AT&T update. If it was me I'd leave good alone and not worry about until the OTA worked.
 
He's still on Android 4.4.2. So not even an Android 4.4.4 update via Wi-Fi on the phone. I understood that you needed to be on the AT&T network for OTA updates, even via Wi-Fi.
 
The upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 isn't significant. Knox 2.0 is the biggest thing and the avergave user has no clue what tha even is. I don't see the dier need to upgrade if nothing is wrong. I understand if you want to be able to experience lollipop but if you can't get anything to work why keep pushing buttons until you brick your phone?

Again if it was me I'd leave it alone until an OTA came through. You can't fix something that isnt broken!!
 
You seem to have missed my point... that because he is no longer on the AT&T network, he has not received any updates at all and would appear to be unable to receive any in the future, hence the manual update. It would also seem that your own experience of AT&T's version of Lollipop is at odds with other AT&T Lollipop users who are, by-and-large, happy with the update. More so than, say, Verizon users.

Nope didn't miss you point at all hence the reason I said that I've received updates via WiFi while not being with the original carrier anymore. He very well may not be able to receive the OTA. If he wants to do it manually by all means do it. You missed my point by me saying that if it's not broken don't worry about it cause with the problems he's having trying to get the update whether it's OTA or manually it's bound to screw something up. So if it's not broken don't worry about it. [emoji4]

Sidenote......I'm not on AT&T so I have no experiences with them. I know what I've been told by friends and family and what I've read here on the forums

I would guess that you are not running carrier hybrid firmware then, unlike the OP, and that your updates are from Samsung and therefore based on your phone's CSC and Product codes.

He very well may not be able to receive the OTA. If he wants to do it manually by all means do it. Judging from these and other forums, the AT&T Lollipop update for the Samsung Galaxy S4, i337, has gone remarkably smoothly and with the minimum of problems particularly when you bear in mind that forums such as this attract those with problems whilst those who are satisfied do not bother to post. This lack of problems is in no small part, due to the high changelist that AT&T based their Lollipop firmware on.

Carrier based devices don't need to be on the carrier network to receive the updates. The best example would probably be WiFi only devices. My carrier still is able to release updates for these. OTA can be downloaded through WiFi, and not using the network.
 
The only thing I understood was that I don't need to be on at&t to update my phone, so then why is the problem happening? Is something corrupt or I don't know, please help
 
Ok, so I have an old at&t sim card, put it in, and it said I had signal, I tried doing the update but it didn't work it said software update interrupted
