Help can't use full 2GB on SD??

Lurker
Hey everyone! First off, I apologize for the long post, but I have scoured the internets for a solution to this and I seem to be the only one alive having this issue. I do not seem to be able to use the full space available on my SD card. It is the stock card (Sandisk), so I doubt that a counterfeit card is the problem. I have tried formatting the card, power cycling the phone, etc. It's a 2 gig card, with about 1.8 usable, but when I move music onto the card, it will not let me go past approximately 700 MB. My OS is Ubuntu 10.10, if it makes a difference (it should as I do not need any device-specific drivers). When I connect the USB cable, everything seems to function normally from both the PC and the phone, and things transfer nicely... until 700MB, at which point Ubuntu tells me there is no space left on the device, despite still showing about 1.2 gigs free in the properties menu. Also, there are no partitions on the card, the files are all mp3, and there are no DRMs in place. Can anyone help?

You get the 1.8 usable because two methods for measuring space exist. The companies use the method that produces the largest number when they market, though the actual number on the PC is lower.

That is strange that you show no space on your card. Perhaps there is an encrypted, hidden partition? I don't know what else it could be than a bad SD card. Unless you have a tech savvy enemy, I would consider a new card.

I am thinking that it is a bad card. The card that came with mine was bad. Any card can be bad, even from good brands. My stock card was el generico though.

Yeah, I guess it must be the card. It's pretty crappy that I get a bricked card brand new in the phone. BTW, doesn't the Optimus M come with around 700MB of internal storage? It seems interesting that that's where my computer is cutting things off (actually at 690 or so). Again, though, when I view the properties of the "storage device," it shows the pie chart with about 1.2 gigs free... That's the part that's irking me.

A 2GB card is worth about $4, so don't worry too much. I remember when that much memory would have cost about $500! The phone itself has about 200MB free for you to use, so you are not transferring the files to the internal memory.

Boot up Ubuntu, open flatted. Delete all partitions off SD.
Make 1 part fat32. 4mb unallocated before and after. Apply.
i had a bad USB drive get fixed like this.
i think it uses that space for bad sectors. If that don't work format that new partition in win7. Full format. 32k cluster

Cool! Thanks man; I'll give that a shot. I'll post if it works. I had thought about adjusting the partitions in Ubuntu, but was worried that it would render the card unusable to the phone somehow. I'm a complete n00b when it comes to Android.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Ubuntu but possibly for you and anyone else you can run Ubuntu without having to install it on your computer using their Live CD. It's really cool and very simple. If you haven't checked it out and would like to toy with Linux it is the best OS to start with. I personally have it dual booting with Windows.
