Can't use HTC Sync with Windows XP and Old USB

I have a new HERO that works perfectly and I love it. But I have an older laptop that doesn't have USB 2 on it and I can't seem to sync my calendar. In fact and I can't get to first base with it. The install fails on the laptop because I don't have usb 2.0 I'm guessing. Is there any other way to sync this with out a cable? This would be nice to get going as my HERO would be 100% then............

Have you the latest Bios on your laptop, and does it support USB2 ?
If it does, have you installed the XP service packs ?

I have never upgraded my bios. Didn't even know I could for that matter. But yes I have usb1 and not the faster usb2. So this must be my problem. I was hoping for an easier work around. I wouldn't give up my HTC Hero for anything but it or the android system has it's short comings.
