Help Can't use internal storage for anything

carsnick

Lurker
Greetings all,
Today i purchased a used HTC desire.
The guy had it configured as such:
- Rooted (superuser application)
- Android Version 2.3.3
- Mod version Oxygen-2.0.1

I don't know if it's good to have these "mods" Perhaps i will try to find a way to go back to "stock" if thats even possible.

Problem i'm having. I don't have a micro SD card, so am relying on the very limited internal storage. I have about 110 MB free there.

It seems no app can access this storage.
If i try to download an app from marketplace, i just get "download unsuccessful"
If i try to take a picture it says please insert an SD card before...(perhaps the camera never can store photo on the internal)?
If i connect the phone to my vista PC, and click on the disk, it says "please insert a disk..."

I'm appreciative of any and all suggestions.

Buy an SDcard.
These phones are designed to have external storage as well a internal and they come with a SDcard when new (4GB on mine)

You can buy a variety of sizes to suit your budget.

It's no surprise you are having problems with no external storage even more so if the phone is rooted and running a custom ROM as some ROMs use external storage as internal storage.

EDIT:

Actually better idea, contact the seller and tell him you want the SDcard that was in the phone!
I can't believe anyone would even be cheap (and nasty) enough to remove the phones SD before selling it!

In answer to your other questions.
When the Desire is rooted it allows Superuser access and gives you access to the phones bootloader, from there so you can do things like full phone backup (to the SD card) and it also also allows you to install custom ROMs (custom versions of the operating system - Oxygen is one of the many available.)
Most people root and install custom ROMs to allow them to circumvent the low internal memory issue on the Desire so they can install more Apps without running out of space as well as allow for different customisation options.

It is possible to go back to stock by flashing the original ROM back over the phone and someone can point you to the links on here where all the different stick ROMs can be found.
Often the stock ROMs will remove all modifications to the operating system and remove root access.

A lot of us run custom ROMs on here with no problems (apart from the lack of phone warranty as it's been rooted.)

Thanks for your reply.
I will go out and buy an SD card this morning.
Hopefully there was nothing system related on the card he removed, and i can simply install a new one and continue from there.

If i still have problems i will likely load the stock RUU, which i did find last night. I actually did try to load it, but when i launched the executable it just gave some failure message. I think i need a "goldcard" inserted for it to work. I will be able to create one once i buy the sd card today.

Make sure your new SD card has at least Class 4 speed.

Thanks, that's good to know. Was just checking prices online and class 4 is a pretty good price decrease from class 6. Think the speed difference between 4 and 6 would be notivcable on the desire, running apps and such?

I don't think it makes a big difference between class 4 and 6 from real use perspective. There are some ROMs that require faster cards to work properly, and they all require min a class 4 card.

Thanks everyone for your input.
It indeed was the lack of the MicroSD card that was blocking me from doing basically anything.
