Root Can't use RUU to S-OFF

Hi everyone! I recently switched from the LG Marquee on Boost Mobile to the EVO V on Virgin.

I rooted, HTC Dev Unlocked it, installed TWRP, installed a stock ROM, then installed 4ext recovery, then installed Midnight ROM senseless and have been using that for a couple of weeks.

The Other night I relocked my phone, unrooted, installed the Stock RUU and accepted the OTA update for the radio fix because my phone has been plagued with the Radio Transmission error since I got it. After the OTA I re-HTC Dev unlocked it, installed TWRP again, then stock ROM, then 4ext again, then restored my Midnight ROM backup.

Well today I wanted to finally do the S-Off wire trick and I started the unroot process I followed the other day to get back to Sock RUU. It was jerofld's EVO V 4G RUU Flashing Guide/Unroot Guide. It worked fine for me the other day so I could accept the OTA, but now the same exact RUU is telling me that it can't work because I am on image 1.14 now and I just came from 1.13 or something like that. I can't remember exactly what it said, but it's because I took the OTA the other day and something is newer.

Is there something else I can do to get that Stock RUU back on my phone so I can do the wire trick?

I found my answer, sorry about the dumb post. You may remove it if you wish. I'll try it when I get home. It's the setmainverslow.zip solution.

You have to flash the SetMainVersionLOW zip here and it will allow you to run the RUU through bootloader.

And apparently you can use a stock rooted ROM to achieve S-Off. I was under the impression you had to be on the Stock RUU with no root. Please correct me if i'm wrong before I start this if anybody has read this.

It will only work on some stock rooted roms, it's best you run the pure stock rom to do the S-off to eliminate any possible problems. Running the RUU to get back to 100% stock, then do the wire trick is your best bet.

You are correct. They have recently updated the Control Bear software and are saying it now requires you to be on the stock RUU, Unlocked bootloader, unrooted.

We just had someone test the other day unrooted and following the new requirements and they were successful in getting s-off. I don't know if anyone has tried on a rooted rom since the update but personally I don't see any point in risking it. Running the RUU takes 10 minutes of your time.

Once s-off you can re-root in a snap. I would follow the directions provided by Unlimited staff as they know all the ins and outs of the software and process. Plus, it is something that could potentially be risky, so why chance it when it's easy to run the RUU.

It's not neccessary to be unrooted. If you just got your phone and all you did was rooted it, You can run the latest ControlBear, you just have to be on a stock rom or run RUU to be back on stock and be HTC unlocked.

Do you know this for sure? Have you s-offed since the software got updated?
I know everyone has done it rooted (including me) but in the past until recently you were supposed to be rooted. I would just like to know if you have 100% confirmed this statement or if you are basing it off of when you s-offed.

Ramjet, do you know when the software got updated?

I can confirmed it, i"ve done s-off with latest controlbear and with root (Superuser installed). It worked.

It may work on a new phone that has only been rooted, one of the unlimited.io developers (fuses) specifically stated in the IRC exchange included in this post not to root before doing the wire trick:

[11:16] <@Fuses> evovuser, stock RUU - htcdev.com unlock - run. No rooting.
Although it may work with a rooted stock ROM for some people I recommend that new users be advised to follow the current unlimited.io procedure if they are using the latest version of the controlbear utility. That way they can get support from unlimited.io via the #juopunutbear IRC channel if they run into problems.

I just downloaded the current V0.11 version for Virgin Mobile Windows users and the controlbear.exe utility file is dated 11/12/2012 so I'm assuming that is when it was updated. As I said in my last post, I'm sure some users have gotten that version to work with a rooted ROM but that's not what is specified in the JuopunutBear prerequisites in the procedure on their website and one of the developers has confirmed that is correct so I don't think it's a good idea to recommend rooting before doing the wire trick at this point.

I agree. It's not hard to run the RUU so might as well just follow the instructions. I've helped many people here that have deviated from straight-forward guides like the complete newbies guide, and even completely skipped steps!!??? It baffles me that someone who has no idea what they are doing would think it's okay to skip steps randomly?? It makes it much easier to get help too if you get stuck if you were following the directions.

I personally wouldn't want to risk it and will inform people to follow the provided instructions. I don't want to bare the guilt of guiding someone into owning a brick :)

Also ramjet, looks like he got a little snippy with you. Heaven forbid you ask questions on a help chat...

Yea, and I didn't even use my normal userid. I think they recognize that name and know that I have a guide on XDA that includes JBear so I don't use that one on their IRC channel anymore. ;)

In theory would one be able to skip the HTC DEV process after achieving S-OFF just by flashing a recovery in downloader? Then flashing a rooted ROM?

That's correct. The custom recovery could be flashed using the "fastboot flash" command or a PG86IMG.zip file via the bootloader. The current controlbear utility apparently installs the JBear 1.57.5757 hboot by default, so that would also need to be downgraded if you are planning to run GB or JB ROM's, which is why many users get S-OFF.

The htcdev.com bootloader unlock is still a prerequisite for the wire trick but there's no need to do it again after gaining S-OFF.

ramjet73

Ohh .I didn't know the htc dev unlock was required on the new process. I haven't checked it out yet. I have done it several times the old way. I was Hoping fresh EVOS could avoid that process since root isn't needed

Yea, they currently want the RUU unrooted stock ROM with an HTC unlocked bootloader. Of course, that's subject to change in the future. ;)

That's what I thought. Thank you for all of your helpful responses!

Thank you so much. I haven't done it yet, I was way too busy yesterday. But I will for sure return to the stock RUU with no root before I do the wire trick just to avoid potentially bricking my phone. So I MUST be Stock RUU with no root and HTC dev unlocked to achieve S-Off! I think I got it. I'm sorry I posted a dumb question by the way, i've looked all over the forums and the S-off isn't straight forward you know?

Thank you all! I'm looking forward to the full potential of my EVO V! One of the main reasons I chose this phone was the great WiMax coverage in my area. I should have held out for the Samsung Victory though, it has LTE!

No worries. There are no stupid questions. That's what we are here for. Everyone has to start somewhere and reading/asking questions is how we learn. :)

Does anyone still have the RUU.exe? I'm trying to unroot my device but it won't work since I have S-on, Relocked hboot 1.58. I need help finding the file. I've checked almost everywhere but most places link it to a goo. website and the link isn't available.:(:(:(

I have a thread with the RUU here: http://androidforums.com/cdma-evo-3...527-rom-update-utility-ruu-all-downloads.html

But you won't be able to use it while s-on. The RUU contains hboot 1.57 and the security checks won't allow you to downgrade while s-on...

Unless you S-off, the best you can do is flash a stock unrooted rom or Unroot a stock rooted rom, then install the stock recovery, then relock the bootloader.

Though. It's probably possible to use the latest Sprint evo 3d RUU, but I think mms would be borked, and it could potentially cause other issues as well.
