Captivate + Google Voice + WiFi = Free Calls ??

I Have:
  • Google Voice is configured with a phone number
  • Captivate on AT&T Configured to dial using Google Voice
  • Captivate on a WiFi Connection, and connected
If I make an outbound call to a US number is it free (No data usage \ No ATT minute usage?

If I receive a forwarded inbound call from a US number is it free? (No Data \ No Att Minute)

Is there a definative answer? Thank you

Sorry, Google voice uses the phone line to call. You won't make or receive calls with it alone, its essentially a call forwarding service.

Hopefully integration in the future with the new Google Talk Calling thing will make this work, but it doesn't for now.

So if I specify GV from my cell when I make a call to Canada, it is not free??

if you use Google Voice to call Canada (or anything) what is happening is Google calls both parties and connects you. Essentially it's like a 3-way call (easiest way to think of it) so you aren't billed the long distance.

But, from the OP "no data / no minutes" - if that were the case how would it work? ;)

ok....here's what I do......I can call any other at&t cell phone for free. I have google voice and I put that number into my "Top Ten" numbers I can call for free on my plan....bingo.....free phone calls to any land line.

One thing you can do for free GV calls on WiFi is use a 3rd party VoIP provider:
1. Sign up for a free Sipgate One account - VoIP PBX - 30-day free trial - move your phones to the cloud Add it to your Google Voice account. You don't have to worry about the costs - Sipgate is always free for incoming calls, even after the trial period, and with GV, all calls will be incoming.
2. Install Sipdroid on the Android, and set it up to only work over WiFi
3. Configure Sipdroid to use your Sipgate account - I Found This Useful: How to: Sipgate and Sipdroid
4. When you want to make a call over WiFi, go to the Google Voice page in the browser (not through the app), and place your call, telling it to ring your Sipgate account. Also, if anyone calls your GV number while you're on a WiFi network, it'll ring Sipdroid.
