Help Captivate kicking other devices off home network?

hooch1

Lurker
I have an odd problem with using my new Captivate on my wireless network at home.

First off, I have an older Linksys-G router. Someone in the house wanted to watch a movie on netflix using the Wii which is connected wirelessly. The Wii could not connect to the network which was odd since someone watched a movie earlier today. I pulled out my phone to see if it was connected to the network ok and it was, no issues. I tried resetting the connection settings on Wii with no luck.

Then for some reason, I had the idea of turning wireless off on my phone. Sure enough, the Wii connected just fine after that. I turned my Captivate WiFi back on and the Wii couldn't connect again. I turned the WiFi back off, and the movie started playing.

I noticed the other day that I had a hard time getting a connection with my wife's Kindle which might be related.

Anyone experience anything like this? Maybe I need to upgrade to a newer N router?

hi there hooch,

Short of installing a different firmware on your G router(many use dd-wrt), I would suggest upgrading to a newer model.

I ran three different WRT54g routers from new until about a year ago, one as a router and two as repeaters. I constantly had problems with the router inadvertently dropping one connection when another was made. Turning my laptop on could disconnect the wii, turning the basement computer on could interrupt the service to the computer in the living room, etc.

I purchased the latest N router, and not only do I no longer have to deal with the phantom dc's, I also don't need the repeaters any longer as I have a strong signal throughout the 3,000 sqft space.

Hope it helps,

Did you try resetting the router? You should try having everything turned on already then reset the router (maybe the modem as well) and then try again. I would think it has something to do with both devices having the same IP address, so you could also try assigning static IPs. I have a similar problem with my Xbox 360 and PS3, they both are assigned the same IP address sometimes so I either have to unplug my 360's ethernet or reset the router.

Agreeing with Jam287 here, hooch1. My old Eris seemed to be dislodging my kid's stuff from the network on my Belkin N.

I went ahead and reset the router and all has been well since (IP overlap, apparently).

I have the same problem but never associated it with my Captivate. I always thought it was the Wii. I also have the Linksys G Router. I mostly ignore it since we don't use the Wii that much anyway. I have to test if I get any connectivity issues on my phone when the Wii is on. That has not happened to me though. I have seen issues with one home computer when the Wii is on. Interesting...
