Captivate Mobile Access Point and Netflix

I am using my Captivate with Android 2.2 for a mobile access point. It works great. I did a Speak Easy Broadband speed test and I am getting over 5mbps download with up to a .5 mbps upload. I was very impressed.

My first ideas where Xbox live and streaming Netflix. Xbox Live does work with it but there is an issue with NAT so online gaming may be affected. My main concern was Netflix. I can't seem to watch Netflix movies very efficiently. It somewhat works but it has proven to be a big hassle with the delays. I see they use Microsoft Silverlight. I am curious if AT&T is packet shaping.

Any input on this?

Welcome to the forums!

You're cuing NF movies on your XB and streaming them to your Captivate, is that right?

You're downloading movies only in SD, as higher res would be lost on your phone?

Either way, you might have some issues due to buffering in order to transcode to the right format.

I'd think that NF / Silverlight issues would only affect attempts to watch on a web browser. If your Xbox can be config'd to stream out at 480p, that might be ideal.

Only attempting halfway reasonable guesses here, maybe to help if possible.

Thank you.

I am not streaming Netflix to my phone. My phone acts as a Mobile access point and my Xbox uses the phone's internet. I decided to watch Netflix movies with my Xbox and TV. I did successfully watch a movie but when I tried to watch a family guy episode it just wouldn't do it. At that point I assume AT&T is packet shaping.

OK, sorry, misunderstood.

Yeah, if you could run a PC Speakeasy (I don't know if an XB can do this, my son moved out with his long ago) with your phone as the access point, choosing a server location near wherever Netflix seems to be serving you from, and it still shows acceptable bandwidth, then it only makes good sense you're being hit with packet shaping when substituting the XBox for the PC in that config.

I'd wonder what the protocols were that were piquing AT&T's interest - or if was just the IP in the packets alerting them. That's strictly a non-practical exercise, tho - sorry.

While using my phone as a mobile access point with my computer I even saw Netflix issues. Flash Video proves to work great. Streaming with Netflix which uses silver light doesn't work so good.

When I first got my mobile ap running, the first thing i did was connect my Wii and started watching Netflix that way. The initial video took a minute but everything after that streamed flawlessly. I don't know if it's the wii or network coverage in this area, but that worked best for me.

The problem I'm having now is that my mobile ap stopped working all of the sudden. I think it happened around the time I tried downloading an app called masqued crusader. My laptop will appear to connect, but no data is transfered so no internet. Wii won't even sync up anymore. Even tried an off the market app called Wireless Tether and still no Wii connection...

There has to be a way to tweak the settings on the piece of hardware. If anyone knows how please send your knowledge this way. It may help with your speed issue too if you can change settings.
