Help Captivate not sending MMS messages?

I was having the same issue of not being able to send or receive picture messages. I spent over an hour in a chat with an ATT&T rep and ended up telling me to do a master reset or call Samsung. After reading this, I logged into my account online and unlinked the Unlimited Family Messaging and added it back myself and fixed the issue!!! Thanks!!!

Hah! Couple of you were right, indeed!

While I was on hold, and reading MrTony's post, I remembered that when I upgraded my main line (3GS) to Captivate, they had to remove Family Messaging Unlimited to do the upgrade, and then put it back.

Guess what happened?

Yeah - he fixed it by re-adding Family Messaging Unlimited, and MMS is working here, send and receive.

Tks for posting info, folks - let's keep this going on all threads, and most people can call AT&T most times knowing what their issue is beforehand!!!!

Now to get more than 1-2 bars in my home...

And no, it ain't the Cappy - EVERY PHONE we've had here the past 10 years has exhibited the same issues. Guy on the phone did say a new 3G tower was coming up just East of my house on August 27th, so let's see if that helps some!

did you have family messaging before you got the phone/
i didnt, i had the 200 txt plan, and had the issue and knew i was txting more so i went unlimited about a week in. I still have the problem, but only in edge areas. I wonder if removing my txt plan, then readding will work

Today I went to the ATT store where I bought my Captivate. I told them about my phone not sending picture texts. They quickly had a lame excuse about the camera taking pictures with too many pixels to send over Edge. I then explained that I was having the same problem when trying to send old pictures that were taken with a low res camera. They had no answer for me and after trying to talk me into trading it for an Iphone they called tech support. After an hour on the phone with tech support I received no answer. The folks at tech support haven't had any related reported cases. I was told that they will call me tomorrow after doing some more research. I have little faith in them solving this issue quickly.
I don't want an Iphone 4 but what other options do I have? If you are having problems sending MMS please call tech support so they will take this issue seriously.

I had the same problem, but I could send pics that I took with FxCamera fine, so I recommend seeing if you can send those as well. I did a factory reset, which didn't seem to work but mine is sending pics fine now, taken with both cameras, I do not know if it fixed itself or what but I have no problem sending them now.

Well let me tell you my ordeal with this. I have been just on hold with Samsung for 2hrs total. I have spent about 10-12 hours between ATT and Samsung. When in 3g everything works great. On Edge I think the biggest file that I could send was like 50-60kb but that was about it. I tried a 139kb file and it just gets hung up. Called Att they said it was my sim or the network was acting funny, I then told them that they were wrong on both accounts becaue I could take my Sim and stick it in another phone and send MMS just fine. Then they said it might be the phone itself so I got a new one and same thing, so I knew it was all the phones that were doing it then. Then they directed me to Samsung and the tech guy said that he has never heard about this problem before. I was looking in the phone and noticed that the APN was just a single one for both internet and mms, but you can't change the options on it. you can make a new one but you can't select it. So I rooted my phone and have been trying to edit the settings.db file to see if I could disable that lock but so for I can't find were it has the settings at yet. I want to make APN's for the internet and mms as 2 differnt APN's. I am going to call them again tomorrow and just tell them it isn't working at all and see what they say. If anything I am just going to haggle them into giving me unlimited data or something since I can't use all the features that I am paying for. Edge is easily capable of sending a 600k file. I am not going to decrease my images anymore than I have to. I will keep you posted on my progress and if anyone figures anything out please popst it.

I posted what AT&T did to fix it for me over on XDA ... cross-posting here for those that are still having difficulties but don't visit those forums ...

Non-rooted Captivate, had a similar problem receiving MMS for the first week (purchased July 18th). Specifically, I could not receive MMS from Verizon customers unless they were using a Blackberry. Verizon customers using LG and Samsung phones, I got nothing. Verizon customers using a Blackberry, MMS would come through to me fine. SMS worked fine to and from all carriers and I could send MMS to friends on all carriers (and they would receive them properly, regardless of their device).

Tested with 3 different Verizon customers in 2 parts of the U.S. (cross-country), with Samsung Intensity and LG Envy phones on their end ... none of them could send me MMS. My screen would wake up as if something were coming in ... but nothing would ever come through. Very frustrating. Went to an AT&T store, duplicated the tests on their demo unit with the store manager's SIM installed.

The Fix (for my issue, YMMV):

AT&T's billing system was correctly showing my device as a Samsung Captivate, but their network provisioning system was showing the device field as blank (which apparently defaults the behavior to "non-smartphone," for what it's worth). The tech submitted a ticket to correct that, as apparently everything had to be in order before the network folks would take a look at the problem. Turned out that simply correcting that field fixed my MMS issue (since it registered my phone in the "smartphone" category). Note that I was told that correcting that field usually takes them 5-7 days, since it's not considered critical, but she pushed it through more quickly.

Customer Support

I have to include this bit here, because the customer support I received was amazing and far beyond what I expected. I understand that I may have had better luck than most. Got to a higher level tech with no fuss, and she immediately took ownership and had excellent communication, emailing me and following up with multiple phone calls to keep me in the loop with what she was doing. I've been thinking about switching carriers, but AT&T finally releasing the Captivate (even with the GPS issue, etc.), coupled with this tech's absolutely superb customer-focused support, will keep me here for awhile longer (and I'm definitely going to send her a glowing email saying just that, which I hope she forwards to her supervisor).

I spent two hours on the phone with AT&T and they tried EVERYTHING. I even went to the store and replaced my sim card. No Dice. They have no clue what the problem is. Just like posted above, with very small messages <100Kb, I can send MMS on the Edge network, everything else just HANGS forever then eventually fails. I have no problems sending MMS over 3G.

A possible solution:

I installed handcent and changed the MMS max sending size to 100KBs in the Handcent settings and now it works. Basically the app will resize the picture to <100KB prior to sending. The resolution isn't great but at least it works for me now.

Someone call QA and get this shiet fix. Is this a Captivate or Android specific problem??

I had the same problem, all i did was go into settings and turn down the pic resolution to 0.3m and i havnt had a problem sending pictures since.

Yes. Take a photo and "croping" it will put it down to a much smaller KB. When thats done, you then can send the MMS through Edge. Worked fine everytime for me now.

So is there anyone who has no issues sending and receiving mms?

No probs whatsoever... I had a friend who couldn't send or receive mms on her iPhone 4. Turned out someone at ATT messed up her text messaging plan when she changed phones. The customer support person didn't figure that out - it took being sent to a higher level tech :).
