Captivate preview

Seems like a nice phone, just looks so big. Guess I'll have to get my hands on it before I determine if it's too big, but it looks like it might be too big for my liking.

Doesn't seem like it. But really... Do you really want to share your ugly mugs with other people?

The only thing that bothers me is the lag they talked about. But if they're using a build a few months old, as well as a different processor/graphics chip, that could be why.

Considering what we've seen out of the Galaxy S I wouldn't worry too much. The Galaxy S runs smooth so I imagine the Captivate will as well in it's final form.

Processor should be the same that is in the Galaxy S. And yes would be nice to see which build of AT&Ts custom ROM they are dealing with...I really hate it that not only the manufacturers, but also the carrier decide to monkey around with the ROM and of course bloat the thing up. It like getting your copy of Windows 7 after it's passed through Adobe, Yahoo, and back through Microsoft before you get it so they can all add their junk.

So it's like buying a computer from a major manufacturer then... The bloatware installed on pre-built machines is ridiculous...

True, but most of the time you can uninstall that junk. Rooting is the same as getting a clean copy of windows 7 from MSDN so you can get past dell not allowing you to uninstall their bloatware.

A bit disappointed its not the final product with fuller review. But, at least its something.

I can say that I am happier wiht the look of it now that I really see what it looks like.

Well damn. Am I the only one that thinks the form factor is a little underwhelming? The faux carbon fiber battery cover looks cheap- it may not be- but it looks it. I'm not too worried about the lag because we have all seen the vids showing the snappy(ness) of the OS on the phone.

My concern is the Samsung UI and I'm eager to see what AT&T has done. Will we have Google Maps and turn by turn, as well as Live Wallpapers? Yes, the wallpapers thing is simple eye-candy but I still enjoy it. And it'll look wicked on the SAmoled screen.

Should be interesting. I'm on the verge of leaving AT&T and either getting the Droid X or the EVO. I desire a larger screen that the 3.5 I have on my iPhone 3G. I'm hoping they give us an idea of when it will actually land. There's chatter on the AT&T site that an AT&T version of the Incredible named the HTC Liberty is in testing phase now. Good options, but I'm still not sure I want to wait. I do like the fact that I have some great options.

It will have Google Maps (AT&T did begrudgingly say that in their press release) As for the cheap looking back this is, unfortunately, true of the Galaxy S as well. Actually the one we get might be a tad bit nicer, but we can always hope for a 3rd party solution that part. The entire back does come off. Shame I think they sacrificed a decent finish back for weight.

The galaxy S definitely has live wallpapers, so we have to think this one will as well.

T-Mob is set to announce theirs tomorrow. Samsung's party is the 29th. Remember when Google announced the N1? I remember them saying something like "Oh yeah by the way you can start ordering them NOW."

What if Samsung did something like that?

I don't think Samsung is in charge of the AT&T time table. But we could see it in the next several weeks. The device endgadget got though was several months old, Maybe one of those devices that AT&T shoves into their big box for testing/modification.

Kinda worried about tethering. On Samsungs site they have a list of all the 'big' features and one of the big features right on the main page says wifi tethering. I highly doubt AT&T will let that stand.

I read in the preview's comments where emuneee (a member here) asked about a date. He got this reply:
My local AT&T store told me they're gunna get it in about three weeks when i walked in yesterday. Not a solid release date... but its something
Can't speak to the credibility, but it sounds about right.

If it's finding its way to sites like Engadget for previews, launch must be close...

I'm not so sure about that. It more seems that someone was testing the phone out for Samsung/AT&T for quite some time but couldn't talk about it. Once it was announced they ran to Engadget to show it off. At least that's how I'm seeing it. Kinda like how we saw the Dell Aero several months ago...

What is the point of sending old, crappy models out for review? I'd rather have had no news, personally. Feeling unreasonably irritated by this ...

They (Samsung nor AT&T) didn't send an old model out for review, a prototype in the wild was simply handled exclusively by Engadget.

Well that's somewhat soothing to my ruffled feelings ...

Overlook me, I've got a stomach bug that's made me irritated with the whole world.
