Captivate release

yep, we pretty much get those every time we ask something android from them IF we even get an answer.
we have started our own redheaded stepchild of ATT facebook page, you should join us. Welcome to Facebook
Most of us in that group have been on a crusade against ATT for there lack of android for months now.

And we've been trying to get info out of AT&T. It hasn't worked. Although they've heard enough complaints that they apparently kick up the ladder.

Hopefully it's before the 26th so I can make a decision. Just heard of this phone tonight, but two things I like over my current Aria is the screen sounds like it'll do better outside (and slightly larger would be nice), and the storage is a bit more than just "significantly" better.

But if I stick with the Aria I'll remain pretty happy.

I found this over in the Fascinate forum, which contains some interesting quotes (I still don't see the need for 5 separate Galaxy s forums...): First Look: Samsung debuts its Galaxy S line of Android smartphones - BusinessWeek

AT&T also said it would sell the Captivate phone for $199, but representatives did not announce its ship date. Verizon and Sprint did not announce dates or pricing. A Samsung representative said all four companies would have phones by late July or early August. AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all said Samsung had not yet told them when they would be allowed to start selling their phones.

So that tells us it should cost $199 (which is no surprise) and should be available by early August, at the latest, and late July at the earliest.

Yeah, but Tmo is selling theirs the 21st(right?), so AT&T should have theirs by then, probably the 18th.

Reasoning: the 18th is a sunday, and from what I've picked up samsung is shipping the phones starting in a week or so. So that gives 8 days before they sell, which isn't unheard of. Failing that, it'll be the 25th.

I asked my AT&T rep and he said none of the reps have been given exact dates yet. All they are told is it will be out in a couple weeks, so I'm shooting for 3rd week of July

Well, that's what I've gathered. The 18th makes sense. The only problem is the closest AT&T store to me doesn't know anything. Which...kinda sucks.

No stores are going to know anything until there's an official announcement. We're in the day and age of the citizen reporter. If one rep with some knowledge shared it with a customer, it'd be on the front page of Engadget within the hour. It's hush hush until it's in print and the public domain. The reps probably won't know anything until WE do.

that said... if your guys guestimate is accurate, then it puts the release within my 30 day window. Dammit! Now I have some options to weigh... =P

Well, my guess is just that. A guess. I'm not entirely sure it's correct, but it makes sense to me, and everyone I've talked to about it.

I am one of those that think there will not even be an announced date until July 30. Reason for it is that is after all those that got the iPhone are past the 30 day mark. Then the announcement will be for a release for 2 weeks later. So I say either the 8 or the 15 of Aug. Which just stinks really. But I think they will do everything in their power to protect the iPhone while they still have it.

tasnuri has a better grasp for AT&T's normal methods IMO...They dont like to really announce these phones until they are imminent. Otherwise you would not buy the other phones they have available. The sooner you buy a phone, the better for them especially if its a model that doesnt completely fit your needs.

And as we can already tell by the way AT&T has treated other android phones, when the article talks Late July or Early August...of the 3 carriers who dont have release dates yet, AT&T is by far the one I would tag as an early August. otherwise the article could've tried to state all by late July.

I'm not sure they will wait that long, but I think there is definitely a reason that T-Mobile has a date and no one else does, especially with the Vibrant being the Canadian model too, I'm sure Samsung wants it to get it's time in the spotlight. But I wouldn't be suprised to see an July 25 or August 1 release date.

I don't know why I wanted to torture myself. I stopped by a brand new AT&T store here, and asked if they knew when the Captivate was coming. Expecting to hear "We have not heard", what I heard instead was "I've been told it will be out in the Sept or Oct timeframe. We don't have one to show right now".

I didn't expect to hear that. I'm not sure I have the patience to wait that long for AT&T.

I doubt that is anything 'official', but speculation by someone that doesn't know. But who knows...may be true.

Aaron over at PhoneDog said in a very early video covering the SGS that, "we keep hearing August" as a release time-frame. I don't have the link handy, but I do recall that he mentioned as much in more than one of the videos. Based on past launches, I'd say that AT&T won't launch the Captivate before TMo launches the Vibrant, so an August time-frame would fit if TMo sticks to their 7/21 launch date.

Definitely sucks that the store people don't know anything about it yet, though. You'd figure that, what, they'd start getting units in ~2wks before launch? I think that's about the only solid info we could go on as far as store reps go.

We're coming to the end of the 1st week of July, though, so I guess we've only got 3 to go before we either see it or we don't. If we still don't have any word come August, though, I fully expect lordmaxx to pull a Mike Douglas/Falling Down routine ;)

Given any extra time they may be taking, I wonder what the chances are that it would come with a better firmware (working GPS and other issues that seem to be fixed with MoDaCO's flash)...and maybe even Foryo.

I won't hold my breath.

The biggest worry I have about the Captivate being the last one to be released is that at the June 29th event, the Captivate was the only model that was a pre production model out of the 4 Galaxy S models. Over at Engadget Mobile
AT&T stores getting Windows Phone 7 retail materials, launch coming sooner than expected? -- Engadget

There is an article regarding the future Windows 7 phones and AT&T and what phones they will have in the near future and how many of each phone they will have. If you look carefully you can see that Android has 14 phones. According to the article, this is for July 24th, but Usually that doesn't always happen and typically AT&T sells these phones around September.

Again nothing concrete and everything is a rumor. The hardest thing is to wait, especially when we see that T-Mobile is launching their phone on the 21st. I did talk to an AT&T rep who worked out of best buy and she did say that according to her conference call that morning, they should start to see phones delivered to AT&T the middle of July, but she wouldn't pin a date they would be sold to the public only "When we have enough to sell to the general public we will sell them" From what I can gather is that most reps really have no clue when phones will be sold, I have been told by several reps to "check the internet"

Think you mean July here.

Yeah, I noticed that in the Engadget article as well. Even if it does mean Sept/Oct, it'd be pretty crazy to see AT&T suddenly carrying 14 diff Android phones by then...

If you check your link you will also notice that the WM7 phones have a qty:6 But that is for 2 phones.
"and that the "QTY: 6" label likely points to two devices, not a sextuplet"
I do not see AT&T having 14 android handsets anytime soon. But using the same math as for the WM7 that would be 5 devices.

14 android phones is a lot considering that most stores only have a few more than that. Off topic, it says that Blackberry will have 7 phones. How many do you think they really will have?
