Root Captivate Root

im sorry if this has already been touched on but im curious as to why when i plug my phone into the computer it says there are no drivers for my device... i would imagine this is unusal. can anyone help me out?
 
I found it easier to download the file, renaming it update.zip as I saved it. Then I just emailed it to myself. When I got the email a few seconds later, saved it (by default it went to the root)

No messing around with a cable or PC issues. Don't know what I'll do with root access, but nice to know I have it :-)

D'oh are you a genius. I bounced around the internet for 3 hours with bad files until I got it right. I shoulda just emailed it to myself!!
 
Sorry for the newbie question, but can someone explain the main benefits to rooting this phone?

I've already used the Sideload Wonder Machine to install 3rd party apps, and this works fine without rooting...so I cant help but wonder what do I gain by rooting? Is it just the ability to remove the AT&T apps?

Can you perform this root if you have not purchased an SD card? Can you choose to save the update directly onto the phone? Sorry for the newb question and if this has been answered already.

look for an app called tAttachApkInstaller something like that, no root required and worked like a charm on all my android phones
 
I need to exchange my phone tomorrow for a number of reasons. Anyway, to basically unroot the phone, do I just need to uninstall the superuser permissions app, our do I need to go back into recovery mode and preform a new process?

Not really. I doubt that any manufacturers would take the time to sue people for rooting. All it does is create a DMCA exemption for getting around copy-protection software to root your device. You are still liable for breaking any copyrights that may exist if you use illegal software or the like.
 
Can no one answer about un-rooting? It seems every post that asks about it is ignored.

xda-developers has a thread for flashing back to stock image. I gave it a try... very simple and definitely takes you back to the factory version of the phone (you lose everything you installed, att&t apps are back, ect.). I am new to android and wanted to re-do removing all the AT&T bloatware so I could more carefully backup and document everything.

So there may be a less intrusive way to get rid of root. But this certainly seemed to do it.

Where exactly is the thread located? I browsed around on the forum and have probably over looked it. I am rooted and would just like to know how to un-root if the time ever comes and I need to lol

I also have been spending quite a bit of time trying to read/find out what happens when 2.2 update comes out if we will be able to get it or if we will need to un-root to get it OTA.
 
This message posted steps to "unroot", which seem backed up by similar thread over at xda

Seems pretty painless. I decided to take the "root" plunge if for no other reason than Titanium Backup and removing the at&t bloatware apps.

Earlier post on flashing back to stock may be needed if you ever decide to return the phone.
 
First time poster and android user here. I have the Captivate and I downloaded the zip file without putting .zip behind it.

I moved the file to /sdcard/ and then held the two buttons on the side and pressed the power key.

I see the boot screen and I select "reinstall packages" and I get

Code: 
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.

I read this entire thread about the .zip naming and I don't have it duplicated like .zip.zip because I turned off "show known file extensions" in windows and then I turned it back on just to be sure.

I have no idea what else to do, but I'm tired of fighting it tonight so I'll pick up tomorrow.

Any advice would be appreciated.

make sure that its located on the internal memory not the actual sd card, because the sdcard is located at /sdcard/sd meaning the recovery wont locate the file
 
I have done 4 hard resets now, and it keeps coming up with all the Sorry..error messages, about Google.android.media. I've read some things to try, such as format the external SD card. Did that, helped for a bit, but can't get anywhere.

I do NOT think the reset is taking, because it comes back to a screen that has that clock you can put stocks into. Still has a stock I put in there.

I am beginning to think that the update.zip file is corrupted. But I can't seem to find a way to get one back on there. May have to take it back to AT&T. Then I may be screwed because it is rooted, and no way to unroot.

Any ideas?

Wait. Located on the internal memory, not the sdcard? So this file needs to be where? In the root of the phone itself?
 
Well, something just worked... not sure what. I put the file in about 5 different places to see if I could get some result, and sure enough it worked.
