Captivate takes so long to charge 3-4 hours??

Hey folks. Just upgraded to a Samsung Captivate from a Blackberry Bold 9000. I love the new phone! But with one major problem. It takes so long to charge! On my Bold, it probably took 40 mins to an hour to fully charge from say 10% life. The Captivate looks to be taking 3 to 4 hours. Not acceptable. If I'm on the run all of the time or forget to charge my phone at night, then I'm screwed!

I am using the OEM USB wall charger.

Has anyone used a different wall charger that improved the charging times? (I've heard one report on the Net that someone used a Radioshack one where .1 amps are used instead of OEM's .07 amps.)

I know turning off the phone or apps makes it charge faster but that's not the solution I'm looking for.

TIA

THREAD SUMMARY:

1. Captivate does take a few hours to charge
2. Charges faster connected to the wall than to a computer via USB
3. Get a extra battery/charger set
4. Batteries for Fascinate and Captivate do not work with eachother
5. Cheapest OEM set: http://www.cellularaccessory.com/et-chgpknvgsta.html
6. Cheap Chinese battery (2) and charger sets are available for around $10 on Ebay

Hey folks. Just upgraded to a Samsung Fascinate from a Blackberry Bold 9000. I love the new phone! But with one major problem. It takes so long to charge! seems excessive...2 hours from dead and im at 100% :o

Welcome to the forums, steaksauce.

My Fascinate takes a few hours, sometimes three, to charge from single digits to full. Most often it is only run down to about 35%, but sometimes I'll have a lot of camera/video activity on it, which drains it pretty quickly.

I don't think your three to four hours to charge from 10% to full is particularly unusual. Perhaps others will chime in.

I should add that often the relationship between the battery and the device (and its battery meter) improves over time and over several charging cycles.

It's much faster with the device (or at least screen) off. A high-current charger doesn't help because the device self-regulates input current (this has been tested pretty thoroughly on other SGS models).

If you want fast charging with the phone on, you might want to get an out-of-phone charger/spare battery combo. Pretty easy to swap out batteries on this thing.

I may need to wait a few days and see after battery "settles" down...

But that product combo is a nice find! Comes with bunch of stuff including a spare battery... that charger itself sells for 40-50 on other sites. Thank you!

You are out of luck. I have USB charging cables in my room, in the living room (connected to my dish receiver), in the car (connected to my FM transmitter), and at work (connected to a computer).

I'm ALWAYS charging the damn thing. Sometimes I avoid charging it and let the battery go down to single digits just to keep it calibrated, but I can't afford to do that too often and end up with a dead phone.

For me it seems to be dependent on whether I use the USB/computer or the AC adapter. USB takes a few hours from the usual 10% area. AC about an hour.

Mine takes 2-4 hours...even if just 1/2 down and I need a refresh before leaving work...since I removed my task killer, seems to take 4 hours now...

Charging time will vary depending on what the phone is doing while charging (foreground and background apps), whether the screen is on or not, and what charger is being used (especially USB from a computer versus a direct wall charger, which can charge at a higher current).

mines actually slower, id say takes a good 6 hours to charge fully.

If im at work using my phone for browsing even plugged in, the entire 8 hours, i might not get to 100% by the end of the day.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

I think that it's the norm for this phone to take a long time to charge, more evidence here in this thread: http://androidforums.com/captivate-...how-long-does-take-your-captivate-charge.html

I think the only solution would be a extra battery with a charger.

As far as Fascinate battery working with the Captivate, I don't think it would:
Here is a guy who tried: Fascinate battery compatibility in a Captivate - Android Forums

Here is a battery that works with Captivate, Epic and other Galaxies but not the Fascinate: Amazon.com: RND Power Solutions Premium Li-Ion Battery (EB575152VA) for Samsung Galaxy S (Epic 4G D700 (SPH-D700), Captivate i897 (SGH-i897), Vibrant T959 (SGH-T959), and GT-i9000) and Samsung Focus i917 (SGH-i917): Electronics

This review says his Fascinate didn't recognize the Captivate battery: Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: RND Power Solutions Premium Li-Ion Battery (EB575152VA) for Samsung Galaxy S (Epic 4G D700 (SPH-D700), Captivate i897 (SGH-i897), Vibrant T959 (SGH-T959), and GT-i9000) and Samsung Focus i917 (SGH-i917)

I'm looking for a cheap OEM battery/ charger set now.

Yes, the Fascinate has a different battery from the other Galaxy S phones. This latter one should work for you (since it turns out you don't have a Fascinate after all).

what is wrong with my captivate/battery? It says fully charge to 100%. The second i plug it from charging, it drops to 95%. When i plug it back into charge, it is reading 95% and charging.

quick tip, if it says 100% leave it on the charger another 30mins or so if able. it doesnt get the full charge so to say even though it says 100%. ive found that leaveing it on the charger the extra 30 mins if i have it to leave on there, it will stay at 100% once taken off the charger, well at least for a little bit..lol it dont take long for it to start draining the battery life.

oh geez, if i do that my charge time will easily be 4 hours minimum from a single digit. i just did it today from 5 percent and it took 3:45 to charge with screen off and all other signals off except the basic phone signal.

what i mean if you just notice it when it tells you your at 100%, let it charge another 30 mins or so. i put mine on the USB charger into my puter this morning when i was at 22% and it took about a hour to get to 100%, but as soon as i took it off the charger it droped to 95% like you said. so i pluged it back in for another 25 mins i guess and it stayed on 100% charge for about 45 mins after i unpluged it, but i didnt really use it any in that 45 mins.

i do most of my charging at night when i go to bed. so i never really know how long it takes to get a full charge. it is left on the charger a good 6-8 hours when i put it on there at night.
since ive taken it off the charge at 11:00am est. i have dropped down to 88% now at 6:55pm est. and i have used it some, a couple dl's played a few games, some texting ect. which is about my normal use. so by the time i get home from work tonight i will be around the 20% mark again and on the charger it goes for the night.

let it drain all the way down and then recharge it if you can. the battery life will get better, not really great but better than it is now.. it will take a few cycles like this to get the max out of your battery.

I can't take credit for this because I saw it from another post. When you unplug it and it does this, recalibrate your battery. So, while on, charge to 100%, unplug, you see it drop to 95%. Shut off, plug back in until 100%. unplug and turn back on. If it is not at 100%, repeat above steps until is shows 100% again once you turn it back on.

I did this, and started getting better battery life as well.
