Captivate worthless, can't trade...

I have had four captivates. Each is slow, weak battery, overheats. I called att. They said that either i got another captiavte, or they could send me a backflip. The Aria, Bravo, Flipout, Flipside, were not available. They said I could take a blackberry, but I said def. no. How long will it be until I can get a Bravo (which is what I want)? And why the eff hasn't ATT sent out the 2.2 update, even after 2.3 has been released??!!

Don't know how long you've had your Captivate, I was able to return mine after three months. Found that dealing with the store was better than the 800 number. I would ask to speak with the manager, bring some documentation with you showing the issues and in a polite manner attempt to remedy the situation. Froyo and the GPS issues is what drove me over the edge, my only way out was an iPhone4. I asked them to cancel my contract and refund my money but they declined. Figured that the iPhone4 would be better than spending two years with a phone that didn't deliver what it promised. I'm also not one that's into rooting, why should I pay $200 and have to rig a phone so that it works as designed.

I'm extremely happy with my iPhone4 and would like to visit Android again once my contract is up but I'll never buy another Samsung phone. I'll go with an HTC or Motorola, they seem to be the two top companies when it comes to pumping out updates for their phones.

You have a good track record, you're on your fourth phone and still having issues. If you back that up with some documentation and have a good chat with a manager, they might be willing to help you. I would also try a different store if you've gone down this route, it all comes down to how much a person wants to help you.

"Hold it differently."

I would have agreed with you if you were saying this about almost any other phone, but not getting what is advertised seems to be Apple's specialty with the iPhone 4.

I have an Otterbox Defender case for my phone, no issues with reception and I can hold it any which way I like. After being an owner of one, I now realize Antenna Gate was overrated. Also, since I've owned the phone, I've gotten two software updates and a 3rd one is on the horizon for March. You can't say the same about Samsung.

I've been on both sides of the fence and can tell you that a lot of the Apple stories here are not true. If you don't like how the OS feels, that's one thing but don't say it's a bad phone when you haven't own one for an extended period of time.

By the way, you can jailbreak an iPhone and have some of the same freedoms you enjoy with rooting. Also, if you read some of the Apple forums, there's Gingerbread for the iPhone already and Froyo for that matter.

So, to me, that sounds like to had to do something with the phone because it didn't work like it was designed. There are a lot of people out there that would prefer not to have a case on their phone, but still be able to make a phone call.

CNET performed testing on 3 different iPhone 4s that showed that there was an issue.

Since I have owned the Captivate, it has received one update, JH7, and I believe that Froyo will be provided Q1 2011 even though I would have liked it sooner.

My sister-in-law owns an iPhone 4 and I am her "computer person". Her's has a <sarcasm> cute pink case </sarcasm> that allows her make phone calls. When she first got the phone there was a two hour period where no one could hear her on the other end, but she could hear them. My friend owns an iPhone 3 and I am his "computer person". I personally dislike the iPhone because of all of its limitations.

Gingerbread and Froyo are available for the Captivate too. There are many of us that are happy with rooting, but think that flashing a ROM goes and bit far and is not for us. I am one of those people.

I am not saying the Captivate is better than the iPhone, I am just saying that if you wanted a phone that promises what is advertised, you picked the only other phone that is well known for not doing that.

I picked up a case not because of calling issues but because I didn't want to drop my phone and break it, Otterbox makes great cases. Again, I think you are jumping into conclusions based on Fanboys going crazy instead of having used the phone for an extended period of time. Have you ever owned one?

The problem with your sister-in-law not being heard for two hours has nothing to do with the phone, never had such issues with mine. My wife owns one as well and is a happy customer, no complaints about reception. A lot of things make up a bad call, so to blame any phone without really understanding the root cause is insane.

One of the things I kind of like with the iPhone is iTunes believe it or not. I get to sync my music, apps and backup all my devices with it from one location. Again, like you, I'm looking for simplicity and not spending my day hacking a phone to get what I want.

Not sure which phone you are referring to when you say picking the wrong one but for me the Captivate was a mistake and I blame Samsung for that not Android. At least for now my GPS works, AppStore is great, have no lag and I'm getting frequent updates and/or new functionality (AirPrint/AirPlay) on a frequent basis. Let's see what's out there in two years when I take a look at Android again.

not to be rude but if you have had 4 captivates and they all are like that, then i would think its more of user problems then phone problems

First of all, long-time listener, first-time caller - thanks to you all for all of the valuable insight over the last few months.

I'm on my FIFTH Captivate w/ AT&T since August 2010. Every single one of them has had the random shutdown issue (which may not be a big deal for some people but is unacceptable to live with in my reality). I keep hoping they'll finally send me a good one but they just keep sending me phones from within the "known issue" range and, inevitably, they fail. AT&T says they can't control what they send me. I have also tried exchanging at the local device service center but all they have in stock are suspect IMEIs as well.

Over the phone with customer service, AT&T offered to switch me to the Sony Xperia 10 but I don't really want to take even a small step backwards in specs. Sadly, that is the only phone offered right now that is even close to the Captivate. I really do love the Captivate (when it works) but I'm starting to seriously consider the offer as I'm really tired of switching phones every couple of weeks.

The fellow at the DSC advised me (off the record) to live with the pain for now and wait until a few new phones are released and then call AT&T and keep escalating until some supervisor's supervisor has enough juice to take care of "such a valued long-time customer." Probably easier said than done but I might just take his advice.

I know this is way OT, but are you a Howie fan? ;)

Hmmm... Not sure what that means. If I were to become a fan of Howie, would AT&T send me a phone with an IMEI of 352982040855394 or higher? As long as Howie's last name isn't Mandel or Long, I'm open to giving it a shot.

I'm sure you've all seen it, but... From the XDA site:
At&t captivate shut down press release - xda-developers

Puts more than a few holes in the ol'
iv had mine for about 2 months and it works fine it just sum people dont know how to use them.
theory (which I promise to not take personally).

But seriously, who's Howie?

Howie Carr is the drivetime talk show host here in the Boston area, and many people call his show - the 'long time listeners, first time callers' use that as their intro line.

Howie would be fully supportive of our battle with Samsung

The phone shutting down randomly and the screen scratching abnormally easy are not issues with knowing how to use them. I am on my 3rd Captivate and other than the GPS, which is now fixed thanks to flashing Cognition 3.02, this one is actually good quality.

It is apparent that Samsung's quality is about as good as your spelling, because there are more people than normal that have had to exchange or return their phones due to known manufacturer defects, often more than once.
