hi all,

i suspect i know the answer to this already but thought id check anyway.

i got a cheap usb charging cable off the net as a 2nd cable for my desire - came with car adapter

Ive used it once before and seemed ok - but today im using it to charge from my pc and the phone keeps going into car mode :/

is it because its a cheap and nasty cable ?

cheers
dan

Does your phone in the car with this cable go in car mode?
If yes, then has the cable a coding for carmode :) (like the HTC car holder).

hi
not tried it in car as only really got it for pc
charging.but couldn't see a straight pc cable list on the
bay .
cheers

It is most likely your cheap cable.

I have the HTC car kit and when charging, it is as if on mains, not car.

When charging from PC with good usb cable, like mains.

Spend the extra and get some quality.

It almost certainly is your cable. Car mode is detected based on resistance between 2 of the USB pins ( 3 & 4 I think but don't quote me) I have had the same problem with a dodgy mini to micro USB adaptor.
Even cheap cables should be OK sounds like you just have a bad un. I have bought 14 of the these retratable ones so far for me, friends and family without a problem.

RETRACTABLE USB A TO MICRO B HI-SPEED DATA CABLE LEAD on eBay (end time 29-Dec-10 19:56:39 GMT)

For your dodgy USB adaptor look at the DHD manual page 179.
There is the description of the behavior :)

The technical background: This connection between both USB pins (4 to 5) is for miniUSB the coding for to distinguish mini-A USB and mini-B USB (goes with USB standardization).

So your adapter is a mini-A USB to micoUSB so it has this connection.
As you said above, HTC uses this resistance between Pin 4 and 5 for coding the car mode therefore with your adapter you has the Car mode :)

EDIT: ... and your USB adaptor isn't dodgy, it corresponds USB standardization ;)

Apart from the fact that it flickers on and off at random. particularly when you move the phone or connector! and it only started happening a couple of weeks ago.

After the firmware update?
HTC probably trying continuously to improve the car mode :)

I just want to say that i have also experienced the same issue, probably for exactly the same reasons. I have been charging through a standard mini usb cable with the (micro/HTC) adaptor. I have also experienced the issues with the phone randomly and often flicking in and out of "car mode" even after charging and turning the phone off and on.

I can understand that while the cable is plugged in the phone may 'think' i am in a car, but why would it think that when unplugged? if you are typing a text and the phone switches in/out of car mode, it causes the android app to encounter an error and stop, meaning you have to retype the message - I suspect it may cause other applications to have problems.

What do i need to do to return the phone to normal behaviour? I suspect buying a new cable is top of that list. Do i need to download a fix? or perform a factory reset?
