Carbon Fiber Back Mod - Tutorial

I work with 3m Di-noc material on custom car installs. I did this to my pre, and laptop last year and posted on the Precentral website. Then i got bombarded by poeple who wanted it done. Since then i have done cars( interiors and exteriors), laptops, ipods, so many different model phones, computer mouses, xbox 360 controllers, guitars, ive even done rims. The Di-noc holds up for about 12 years inside and about 4 years outside. Expensive to buy unless you just get a 12"x12" or a huge roll like i do.
I used to like it alot, but now ive done so many things im kind of over it now. Looks good. keep it up.

I just got mine in the mail today; ordered the 4x8 sample from carbonfibergear.com and got it in 2 days since ordered, so very fast shipping (just an envelope, but all the way from VA to ID).

Having put it on yet because I'm going to have to exchange my phone and I don't want to haul it into the store and then have them bitch about it being on there. Haha.

Anyhow, found this place that has a 12x12 piece for $10 shipped, which is a lot better deal to start off with. 3M DI-NOC Carbon Fiber Vinyl

Yeah there are much better deals on ebay too. Here's how mine came out. Pretty happy with it.

So, I ordered a custom skin I made from Unique Skins using a jpg of dark blue carbon fiber sample...well, it didn't really come out that great...hahaha...but oh well, not a lot to just try out. Took a pic of the back. This is just the cheap skin, not the non-scratch. Just so you know, this pic that I took with the EVO looks MUCH better than the skin does in real life...LOL.

This one looks really good. How did you get the circles so "straight"? Especially the small ones for the flash. Id like to try this on mine but it would drive me insane if everything wasnt perfect.

So when you take one of these off, there is zero gunk left over? I feel like with all the heating and everything, it would somehow screw up the back of the phone...

This stuff doesn't leave reside behind. But just in case, if you're really that concerned about any possible leftover adhesive, you can get some Goo Gone, paper towel, and elbow grease to remove it. WD-40 on a paper towel also works in a pinch.

Exacto knife. If you use a very light touch and roll it around the circles you can trim it right to the edge.

Nice job, looks great. Do you think it would be possible to use a dremel sand and smooth any rough edges left over from the knive?

Is it possible to remove it after a week? I wish someone would make a brushed aluminium back door, like the one on my zune hd (its a really small solid mp3 player). Zune on adroid would rock too

HTC has a full aluminum case at their site... am prolly gonna get that and then just for fun apply the carbon to that:)

Just did my phone a couple days ago. The phone looks and feels awesome. It cost me $5 and was really easy to do. All you need is a sharp utility knife, needle and a hairdryer.

Wow, talk about ancient thread resurrection!

Hard to believe I did this over 7 months ago.

But for what it's worth, my backing is still on my phone. Haven't had a single issue!

I did mind ths past weekend. Looks great! I've been getting alot of positive feedback from my friends that own EVOs. They're getting in line wanting me to do it for them. lol

GREAT TIP!
