Case not turning Nexus 7 off?

I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and the nasty case I first used (had elastic to hold it shut) did turn it off (usually) when I closed it.

I brought a genuine Asus case for it - the premium not the travel - and when I close it it doesn't turn the tablet off. Will this be a case fault or a problem with the tablet? I have also tried a Mofred case which didn't seem to turn it off most of the time.

My Kindle has an Amazon case which works brilliantly so it can be done.

The fault is probably in the case. I have this case and it works perfectly every time.

That's tough to tell if it is case or tablet. I have a Moko on both a 2012 & 2013 and they both work every time, open or close. I'd lean towards the tablet as magnets are magnets, they either work or don't.
