Help case questions

Lurker
I really don't like cases but have realised it's a necessity because it will get dropped eventually no matter how careful I am.

I saw a drop test of the g3 being dropped face down from waist-height and it completely shattered the screen.

So presumably I need case where the case comes out from the phone front 1mm or so to protect the screen - will that stop it shattering?
Or do I need a screen protector as well?
If I just had a screen protector would that save the screen from shattering?
What kind of protection do the circle cases actually give? It doesn't look as if it would do much.

Lots of the questions there sorry.

I love the G3 case made by Spigen (I have it on my G3):

It comes up from the screen quite a bit (so you can safely set the phone upside down without scratching the screen). The case edges don't curl around the screen edges too much so it doesn't peel screen protectors off. It's made of a black TPU with "shock cushions" on all for corners with a plastic armor backing that snaps on (mine is gunmetal color so it matches my phone perfectly). And the genius back button design makes it easier for cases to protect the power and volume buttons. The Spigen case has really deep cutouts in the back protecting the power and volume buttons as well as the camera lens and flash. Perfectly designed case!

That being said if you drop your phone there is a really good chance the screen will break no matter how well it's protected. It's just pure luck (of course I'm hoping the Spigen case will help somewhat).

I think it will be tough for any case, even with a lip, to stop a screen shatter if it lands perfectly face down. My wife's iphone did just that with a case... crash! tinkle!

Having said that I bought this rather robust case: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JV6PQ4E/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1424195645&sr=1&keywords=lg+g3+case

It's a two part case... a soft gel like interior piece which is then covered by a hard plastic piece that protects the corners and sides.

I have dropped the phone to a hardware floor from waist height without issue.

I don't use screen protectors. The screen is already scratch resistant (not scratch proof).

As for cases, I never count on a case to prevent damage from a drop. They are designed to prevent scratching on the exterior of the phone. Imagine if you wrap yourself in hard plastic and jump from the 3rd story of a building. You're still going to break bones. ;)
