Cases or screen protectors?

found this guy on fleabay, offering a "too good to be true" deal

Samsung Captivate Cell Phone SCREEN PROTECTOR SHIELD - eBay (item 170517648662 end time Jul-29-10 20:31:18 PDT)

Manufactured by Invisible Gadget Guard in the U.S.A

with a free charger for $7 with free shipping

anyone know about invisible guard?
It is the exact same thing I ordered from another seller, except I got the full phone kit with charger for $12 shipped.

FINALLY! After 10 days, this questionable eBay seller finally managed to deliver.

Upon opening the package, I found a cheap generic chinese made charger (wasn't expecting anything more), made by Asmyna Wireless Accessories, which I immediately opened in the post office parking lot and tested to see if it even worked. Sure enough, my phone indicated that it was charging, good enough for free! I was not able to find this exact one online separately, but it seems the ones I could find for other samsung products retail between $24.99 - $29.99.

Asmyna Products for detail

The second and main item of this review was the screen/body protector. It is a very nicely packaged kit by Gadget Guard (made in the USA). The exact item retails for $24.99 on their website.

I read the instructions completely as I have never installed a product like this on an electronic device before. I have however done vinyl graphics on emergency vehicles and professional window tinting before, so this appeared to be no different, just on smaller scale.

The only thing that troubled me was the directions kept referring to the "install squeegee", as if there was one supplied, mine did not have any squeegee in the package. Nevertheless I proceeded by using my own squeegee and all was well. It says to install the screen protector first as it should be the easiest, I begged to differ and installed the small body cover for the bottom sliding part of the battery cover. That went smoothly, the tolerances for the sheet in relation to the edges were fair as well.

I decided to install the hardest piece next, the corresponding piece that covers the bottom side of the phone where the camera lens is and also travels down each side along where the power and volume buttons are. After repositioning and re-wetting a couple of times, I came to terms with the fact that this piece is just cut a little too long. Ill fire up my camera later, but in order to have the guard line up properly around the buttons, it results in the side pieces towards the bottom of the phone being 1/16" - 3/32" longer than they need to be. They don't exactly dangle off the phone but you do have to curve them over the corner just a tad. The thing I notice the most is that the side pieces do not come up and meet the previously installed piece where it should, so even though its protected, its not visually pleasing for an nit picky perfectionist like myself. The circle cutout for the camera isnt exactly perfectly centered over the lens either in order to make the sides line up where they need to be.

Once installed, it does not appear noticeable, however when you pick the phone up in your hand, you can kind of feel the edges of the guards. I'm assuming every guard is like this and it cannot be avoided, but it bothers the crap out of me, mainly on the side pieces that extend down around the buttons. Since they do not line up perfectly at the bottom either, I think I will be modifying it in the future with a razor and just keep the part up around the lens to match the piece on the bottom.

I have not installed the actual screen protector yet, I'm waiting to try something with it first and I will not be installing the top and bottom pieces around the charger/speaker jacks or the lower speaker or the main battery cover. The top and bottom pieces will undoubtedly look like trash and I don't see myself scratching that part of the phone with normal use and if I damage the battery cover, Im sure I can pick up a replacement either on eBay or through Samsung since its an easily removable part.

So in conclusion, it's worth 12 bucks even for the charger alone, Im sure the screen protector is just fine, the body pieces do install well but the alignment is only good at best.

I'd say if you're not interested in the charger, then look into a better alternative to the Gadget Guard protector on eBay.

Mine came in today's mail, same guy, off ebay, ordered earlier this week, maybe it was Wednesday? I assume - in your case, he was simply out of stock.

The squegee is supposed to be a credit card - if I recall from a mall demo.

You're aware that AT&T doesn't manufacture this device, correct?

What an uncalled-for sarcastic comment! Perhaps it is you who does not understand the mobile phone business? I am well aware the phone is manufactured by Samsung to fit AT&T's requirements and market price point/profit structure. I will generalize this discussion but since AT&T is a fully unionized company they require higher profit margins in order to maintain reasonable profitability. This is why AT&T phones often have lesser features than the equivalent model on another carrier (iPhone excepted), and tighter feature controls. It is also one of the reasons why they are among the first carriers to eliminate the unlimited-data plans.

Uncalled for how? your post insinuated that ATT selected the tempered glass instead of another choice that was available on other Galaxy S models. In fact the entire Galaxy S line from what I can find from a quick search uses the same tempered glass. This was a choice by Samsung NOT ATT, was there some super Gorilla glass Galaxy S counterpart that was made? If you can post links to back up your claims then by all means show us how ATT "cheaped out and went with standard tempered glass" instead of the other temeperd glas available on the other Galaxy S models.

As far as protection goes I always suggest getting at least a screen protector, but for me I think Ill wait and see if Seidio comes out with something. i was very happy with the Innocase for my 3G. If your careful with your phones though, then you might not need one.

Tried to do the gadget guard install today. I am no idiot, it sucks. The screen beauty, in the crapper after the install. The squeege, a credit card help but, NOT great.

I will have to find one elsewhere.

the screen protector seems fine for me. I installed it on Sunday morning. I didnt bother with the squeegee to install since I barely used it on the body parts, I just wet it slightly then pushed any bubble out with my finger and a soft cloth. It had some haze at first and I didnt like the "tacky" feeling at first, but the directions says to give it a day for the haze to go away, which it did, and the the tacky feeling went away with use as well.

After using the evo's kickstand for 2 weeks I found it extremely useful. Now that I have the captivate I was hoping to find a case with a kickstand. Anybody seen anything yet?

I ended up getting the Invisible Gadget Guard from amazon (Amazon.com: Invisible Gadget Guard | Screen Protector Shield for Samsung Captivate | Lifetime Replacements: Cell Phones…) but don't care much for it. There were a couple air bubbles but they worked themselves out. However main problem is it has a slight haze almost like it never fully dried in some spots. It's very distracting and takes away from the beauty of the screen. It's been almost 4 days so it should definitely be dry by now. Maybe go for the ATT one (if I can find it) or ZAGG. My wife and daughter both have ZAGG on their iPhones and it seems to work/look pretty good.
