Accessories cases..ugh

Lurker
Im aware there are about a dozen posts on the subject as I have been reading them for the past 2 days, but, there seems to be a lack of comparison reviews so let me explain my situation:

I work in the HVAC field. crawling around in attics working on air conditioning units and the like. The conditions aren't as bad as, say, construction pier hole drilling - But its still likely the phone will be bumped and may occasionally be dropped from waist height or lower, so, I need a bit more protection than a thin scratch protector.

I have heard bad things about seidio cases's wearing out fast. Im not big on the idea of having to replace a case once a month. The Otterbox defender is supposed to be poor quality compared to the stuff they've made in the past; Except for the commuter, which doesn't come with a holster clip and I definitely need that.

So my last option is the ballistic HC it seems. I honestly cant imagine using the optional layer for the bulk it adds to the phone, if its too huge it may actually get in the way of my work. I understand you cant really sacrifice bulk for protection, I was just wondering... How much larger is the phone with the ballistic minus the optional layer, and does it still fit well in the clip? Will it still offer strong bump and drop protection WITHOUT that last layer?

Perhaps somebody else out there has a similar work line and can comment on how they protect the evo?

Thanks.

I drill a lot of caissons and my Evo has lasted me longer than any other phone in the last 10 years. I no longer use a case or a screen protector. BTW, drilling pier holes(caissons) isn't difficult or strenuous, it's mostly loud and boring(pun). I mostly fear for my phone when I'm climbing around on concrete forms.

I don't work in an industry that is destructive to cell phones, but I do have the Seidio Innocase Rugged. I can't see this thing wearing out in a month.

Who said that Siedio Cases wear out? Which case was it? In what way did it wear out?

There is nothing out there that will offer more protection than the Seidio Rugged...except perhaps the Otterbox Defender.

I personally don't like that the Otterbox has a built in clear screen. I chose the Seidio, and have had it for sometime now.

Keep this in mind...it has a bit of exposed silicone...which is rather soft. It will wear down if exposed to abbrasive surfaces. All plastics will, but softer ones seem to me like they would wear out faster.

The HC without the silicone is roughly the same size as the defender and yes it does fit in the holster with and without the outer siicone. I have the defender as well as a grey/black and red/black HC's.

look into the case mate tough case. it is a great case and not nearly as thick as some of the other cases but still offers excellent protection.

people have been saying that the corner clips on the outer plastic shell section of the sedio cases tend to break off after about a month. I appreciate all the constructive comments. I ended up going with the otterbox defender for a few reasons:

I like the built in screen protector, the case add's bulk but not TOO much bulk to make it uncomfortable. It comes with a decent clip holster, and I love the way the outer layer feels in my hand.

The fragile kickstand wasn't really a big deal to me because, a) I dont use the kickstand much at all if any. b) The clip holster functions as a stand in its own right.. pretty well, actually. c) It was available at the sprint store.. im a sucker for instant gratification.

I actually screwed up yesterday putting the thing in the clip with a piece of my shirt in the way. I pulled on my shirt after I clipped it in and the thing fell from waist height directly on the concrete. Not a scratch.

The case isn't SO rugged that I would feel comfortable dropping it alot, but, it works when it needs to, and it fits my needs perfectly.

Thanks guys.

I dont know what company you worked for, but the drilling company I worked for I worked as a ground hand. it consisted of 10 hours a day of walking knee deep in mud, constantly swinging a sledge hammer to knock worn teeth out of an auger, and carrying 5 gallon buckets of water to the hole from about 50 yards away every 20 minutes.

I was on a few jobs where I sat on a bucket all day measuring holes but those jobs were few and far between.. On the other hand we did A LOT of underwater holes and drilling for major freeway expansions and theme park roller-coasters like six flags.

I've done drilling, demolition, concrete pouring and removal, residential construction, and concrete cutting.. Drilling was the only one I've ever done in which I carried salt packets around in case I lost too much water.

I know thats way off topic but I worked drilling before and after my 5 year military tour. I was in great shape, and I cannot fathom anyone saying its not a strenuous line of work unless they are either on a crane or on a auger.

now back on topic:

Does anybody have a seidio 3500 and rugged case? How much bigger are we talking here? That extra battery juice would be very nice but I'd be worried about adding the extra weight to the phone unless I had a case that could protect it in a fall.

There are two builds to the Seidio rugged. I've had both. The newer one (only one offered by Seidio) is great. It comes with a slightly re-designed holster as well.

The Hard plastic skeleton is fine, not that there was much of a problem with it before. The port flaps are less likely to tear. The soft skin doesn't loosen up as much/fast. The holsters clip is much sturdier.

With the Rugged you also have the option of taking off the outer skin and skeleton and using the, included, Innocase 2.

Wait a sec...don't the corner clips break off automaticaly after about a month? :p

I have the regular Rugged, and so far, everything is intact. THe corner clips aren't going to snap off for no reason. You gotta drop the phone on those clips for that to happen. I suppose removing the outer shell without using care could also damage it, but I've taken mine off at least 5 times in 2 months without any issues.

If you keep the phone in your pocket, you'll get lint and dust buildup along the screen where it meets the edge of the case. You can peel back the case and wipe it down, but I usually take everything off every 2 weeks for a "deep cleaning".

I'll let you know once my corner clips start to break.
