What does everyone think about the market for ruggedized smartphones, specifically android? I work outdoors a lot (i am a geologist) and I spend my free time skiing and sailing and I would really be pleased with a high end rugged android. The only phones I have heard anything about are the Casio C771 Commando, which is to be part of the Gz'One line for Verizon, and the Moto Defy, which is a semi ruggedized phone on the TMob network. Any information regarding the release of the Commando or any other thoughts would be appreciated
 
I believe every phone should be water resistant but people will need to get over the idea that a phone should be pretty like the iPhone.
 
I'm glad to finally see a rugged Android phone come to Verizon. I'm bothered by the fact that the guts aren't as attractive as the ruggedness. There's no reason a rugged phone can't be a great performer too. But then, I'm not taking the price point into consideration.
 
I am in the other camp here; would rather see very long battery life and a screen that is more readable in bright light in this rugged design. I wouldn't mind a monochrome screen like the e-reading devices, for long battery life and bright light viewing; if they could make it work well with apps.

I figure I will get a tablet for those times I want speed and a nice display.

I too am pleased that we Verizon customers finally have a ruggedized Android choice.
 
The pictures seem to show two contact points on the left side....possibly for a charging cradle?

I hope they will be offering desktop and car docking stations that are drop-in.

Hey - I was wondering if this was going to be gimmicky or not - but I'm seeing from the above link, this is a very cool and well thought-out configuration.

The vid under G'z Gear is a good overview.
 
Yeah...the name is goofy.

The manual is available for download on that site as well.

It includes a flashlight app.
The manual states the docking cradles are available for separate purchase....too bad there, but they are a drop-in cradle(in landscape position).
Some of the other apps are interesting.
The mail and message icons show a numerical value for the number of unread messages.
One of the side buttons is a programable app launch button....just set the app you want it to launch.
It contains the standard weather/news widget that I like in my original droid....hate that Motorola dumped it in the Droid-X I got for my girl.

It states it has a 1mm thick Gorilla-glass digitizer for increased ruggedness.
Is this thicker than the original Droid?
 
after looking at options for replacement of the my OG Driod, I was trying to choose between the tbolt and the charge, one thing is that 4g isn't available in my area anyway and by the time it is I may be on to my next device.

I love the idea of the rugged casio and at the price point I can get the 32gb card for it, but I guess I need more speecs:

1. processor?
2. resolution?
3. accessories (will there be a car dock?)
4. ram?
 
I don't know what processor, though it is claimed to be running at 800 MHz.
Don't know about a car dock.

ok, I don't get it, this is not a "google featured phone" can the google apps be loaded? or is it somehow locked down??

this one totally came out of left field, I was all set on the tbolt or charge to replace my droid, but a phone I can drop or get wet is a big bonus compared to lte I don't have in my area.
 
I'm pretty excited. I went from a G'Zone Boulder to my Ally and I miss the ruggedness at times. I like to bike, hike and snowboard and I really liked never having to worry about my phone.

When my new every 2 is up I'm going to give this phone a look.
 
I've had mine now since friday afternoon and I have to say I'm pretty happy with it. I had a droid incredible before this and the casio doesn't feel noticiably slower. It does have a few cons though.

The biggest one to me is the fact there is very little internal storage. There is only 209 mb of free space on the internal memory when you take it out of the box. It comes with an 8 gig sd card, so you just have to remember to move things from the internal storage to the sd card.

The second one is it comes all binged up. Bing search, bing maps, etc. You can download the google equivalents from the market and use them instead, but the bing apps cannot be moved to the sd card or uninstalled unless you root the phone.

On to things I like. The loudspeaker kicks much ass. Loud enough to hear in the noisy shop I work in, and excellent clarity at full volume. Sound quality on phone calls not using the speaker is very good as well.

The one I played with in the store was significantly faster than my original Moto-Droid. The speed seemed good to me....considering I can get a ruggedized phone.
The Bing thing doesn't sound like it causes too much trouble.....though I agree that it would be better if they had left out that stuff.

I notice that someone posted in the "root" section that something called "Super one-click" works on the Casio.

If I were not strapped for cash I would get one today.
I just replaced the digitizer on my Droid and it works so well that I can't justify the expense of the Casio....for now.
 
I'll be getting mine tomorrow. I'll give some 1st hand info as well. I'm going from a thunderbolt to this, ill comment on how it compares. Hope it has a better battery life. The battery on my thunderbolt is abizmal even with 4g, WiFi, gps and some other things turned off

keep us updated!!

battery life is fine for me on the tb, but I do miss the ruggedness of my old gzone type s and boulder
