CAT B10 ----- NOOB Problems

delamite

Lurker
I just found this community,
hopefully I can get some help. 6 months ago I purchased my first smart phone (CAT B10) from an authorized dealer on-line. I had air time on the phone for 1 month, and gave up trying to get all the functions on the phone to work.

I would also like to state that I am not a tech illiterate person, in fact I am running Linux Os from my desktop as I type. The Os on the phone has me very confused and am looking for a place to start on fixing the problem. I am even considering selling this phone because I do not believe it will be that practical for me, and the time trouble shooting/correcting sounds like it could be in depth.

So, before I even attempt to get start diagnosing my phone, I want to say that this could warrant a lot of help from this community. If the community is up to it I am also.

Hello and welcome aboard, delamite.

Its nice to have you join our community. I can't say that I'm familiar with your device, but hopefully you'll get the help (if needed) here on this site.

I will leave your thread inside here - to see if anyone else who is familiar with this device might point you in the right direction.

Thanks for joining. :)

Ive never heard of the phone but if its a generic android issue, someone should be able to help

Hello and thank you for the greetings.

this phone has the Gingerbread Os Funky, so my guess is yes it is very generic. I am not pleased with the Gingerbread b/c reading tells me it is an out dated Os. I guess theres not much I can do about that now. Like I said, this is litteraly the first smart phone I have owned, and I wish I had done more due dilligence before purchasing it. I work for Cat, so I wanted this phone.

Well lets get started,

Android Version : 2.3.5
Kernel Version : 2.6.35.11 -perf

I would like to make sure the Os is up to date, honestly I do not know how to initiate this task.

Ahh Cat as in Caterpillar :)
From what i see on google, gingerbread (andioid v2.3) is as far as its supported.
Unfortunately although Cat is a huge company, theyre a tiny phone company and small companies dont tend to update their phones. It takes a lot of resources to make raw android work on a non-google phone.
if there arent any official updates then your only chance of updating it is if someone has made a custom rom for it which is doubtful tbh since its such a rare phone.
Dont be disappointed in Gingerbread though, its only a couple of versions behind, until very recently it was the most widely used version in the world and imo gingerbread was when android really matured. 99% of apps will run on it so its not a huge problem.
Id love to see how it runs on the Cat though lol. I dont even know what phone manufacturer made it for Cat. It seems like a gimmick phone im afraid.
Maybe im wrong though and it has been updated.
In settings, about phone, is there an option to check for updates?

it says system is up to date.

I just found this :

However, as the case is with rugged smartphones, the Caterpillar CAT B10 doesn't shine with anything in terms of specs. It has a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, protected by strengthened glass, of course, and a single-core 800MHz processor. The camera on its back is of 5 megapixels, and you also get a front-facing shooter for video chats. The smartphone runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, but an update to Android 4.0 ICS is promised for later on.

Cool. Have you found anythin else about the ICS update mate? Hope they filled their promise

So i dont expect a responce on this but here goes im trying to get my cat b10 into recovery mode. ive have tried the following
press and hold Power + vol up = 2 vibrations then nothing
press and hold Power + vol down = red background small white letters in upper left hand corner "Welcome Update" then nothing
press and hold Power + vol up + vol down = 2 fast vibrations then 1 vibration then boot normally
press and hold Power + vol up + vol down + camera button = same as ^^
press and hold Power + camera = normal boot.
any help would be great
