Root cautious noob

Hi all, I am a very cautious noob considering rooting as I am fed up waiting for Orange to roll out the sense 3 update. I have a stock s-on desire s as supplied by Orange in the UK.

I have been reading all of the threads and piecing it all together, thanks for all of the posts - really good information.

I just have some questions before I take the final plunge.

1) Getting back to original settings in case of warranty. I thought I had a handle on this but I have now stumbled upon the 'goldcard' approach - mainly in the desire forum rather than the desire s ones. So my question is, do I have to make a goldcard or is that not relevant for the desire s?

2) Trustworthyness of ROMS. This might seem like a stupid question, but what is to stop someone suggesting that a certain ROM is good which then turns out to be hacked with embedded viruses ready to steal my credit card details etc?

A gold card is only required when you are trying to install a RUU that isn't made for your phone (orange branded) that isn't to say that you can't install any RUU.
When you install a RUU it checks your phones cid to check if it matches, but when you have a goldcard it ignores it.

What is your current software and baseband version (Settings/About/Software Information)? Cause the only orange RUU i see is RUU_ Saga_Orange _UK_ 1. 31.61 .1_Radio_20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M_release

Just remember that downgrading a RUU isn't that straight forward I think, I'm not sure though. i.e. if you install 2. 10.401 .8 (Europe) will installing the above mentioned one work without a hitch (cause its orange not Europe) or will you have to alter the software number before downgrading.

If you use a stock ROM I wouldn't worry about it, and even your more common roms, but hey I guess its possible on your more fringe roms.

I was able to do this for my Desire. It was a 2 step process:

1. Start with S-Off, flash a down grade IMG from AlphaRev 1.8
2. Run the right RUU

That's it.
