Root [CDMA] Cannot access stock recovery

ronnron

Lurker
Hi all,
I am on 1.50 hboot , 2.17 ruu, unrooted.

I would like to get temp root in order to downgrade hboot. However, I am having some basic issues regarding the stock recovery. I cannot seem to get to the recovery screen : it gets past the white HTC screen, but then flashes the red triangle. This happens if I select "recovery " from bootloader, or if I try to reboot via adb shell. I re-flashed the entire 2.17 ruu (including recovery), but problem still occurs. What can be wrong here ?

thank you very much

I think to pull up the menu in stock recovery you need to hit the vol up and vol down at the same time once your in stock recovery and you will then get the options.

Thanks for the tip mteezey, but it goes straight to the red exclamation mark/triangle ; forcing me to take out the battery and reboot from there. :(

XsMagical,

Yes I have tried via 'adb reboot recovery' , and I get the same icon w/ red exclamation mark and triangle . It totally crashes from there, you must take out battery to reset.

Does it sound like my recovery is corrupt in some way ?

Sounds like you don't have a recovery flashed

The red triangle is the stock recovery. Android stock recovery likes to hide the text when the recovery is first booted up. So you have to figure out how to get the text to show up. I haven't used it on the Evo 3D, so I don't know what button activates the text. But I'd recommend trying the power button. Then you use vol up and vol down to change the options. Then probably the camera button or the power button will be used as an enter key. At least, that's how it worked on my Droid X.

Thank you very much to all. Vol Up/Down and Power got me to the Recovery options. Had tried it before, but did not work for some reason.

I change over to 2.08, and proceed with zergRush .

However, I currently have phone bricked, but I cannot get the 1.40 flash going. When I insert bricked phone into Ubuntu (virtual box) , both Win and Ubuntu report a non-android USB. The driver reads Qualcomm I believe, and I suppose this is why it cannot find device and flash.

Any hints to recognize the device once bricked ?

thank you .

Glad you got it ronron.

Just an update here just got my hands on a stock 3vo I can confirm it is vol up+vol - to bring up the menu in stock recovery. I can thank my Droid x2 for that knowledge from having to sbf all the time. Ps never buy a MOTO. HTC for life!!!!

Success !

It looks like I had to run Ubuntu on its own. VirtualBox / Win does not recognize the phone once bricked .

Ah, makes sense. As a FYI to anyone else having this problem, there is a Live CD that runs a lite version of ubuntu on a CD for unbricking purposes. The lite version of Ubuntu doesn't install anything to your computer, it runs it all from the CD/RAM. You can find that here: [TOOL] HBOOT Downgrade Toolkit Live CD - xda-developers
