Root [CDMA] Firmware upgrade?

As a complete moron when it comes to rooting devices, I have been doing a large amount of research on the topic. After watching videos and reading posts about rooting the EVO 3D via the Revolutionary method, my comfort level has increased.

However, I am still nervous about updating the firmware when a new version of Android is released. For example, will I be able to upgrade to the rumored Ice Cream Sandwich when it becomes available? Will I have to flash it back to stock via an RUU or will I be able to download and install it like I would if the device were not rooted? These are all questions for which I would like to have answers before I initiate the root process.

I thank you in advanced for dealing with noobs like myself!

(Sorry if this has already been asked, I was unable to find any definitive answer to this question! :()
 
Welcome to the forums!

No worries, it's a common (and very good) question.

Once rooted, you will stop taking your updates over the air.

You'll simply go get a zip package of your favorite rom, updated, from one of the developers at XDA, even if your choice is to remain with the stock rom, only rooted.

The zip file updates appear within a day or less of the over the air release.

No need for going back and forth with RUUs and rooting.

Your best practice will be to stay rooted forever.
 
Also it is almost a guarantee that we will see bits and pieces of ICS well before an official release one of the added perks. Though early on it will be a tad unstable so be careful flashing roms that are in Beta form or Nightly's to start out because if you don't know what you are doing you can A) really mess up your phone B) become very frustrated with the process.

I would suggest finding a stable daily driver to start out with and branch out from there. Sounds like you are on the right track by doing diligent research before deciding root was right for you always good to hear. Good luck
 
Wait, so if you decide to root, you absolutely CAN NOT stay with the stock rom if you want to update your phone? Is it easy to just uninstall the unwanted rom and keep the update?

You cetainly can stay with the stock rom you just do not want to accept an OTA update as there is a 99% chance you will loose root(I would recommend turning off the OTA updates all together)

When htc/sprint send out an update Devs will release a zip that you simply flash so you can keep all your root goodies and yet have the benefits included in the update

And you don't have to format just wipe cache and dalvik cache
