Root [CDMA] HBOOT Questions

Ray-Ban

Newbie
1) Was about to do the HBOOT unlock when I read that it will wipe all of my data. Anyone know a free tool, or any means of backup up things like texts/contacts/photos, and then restoring them once the unlocker is finished?

2) Once unlocked via the HBOOT, can I install a wifi hotspot program like Barnacle? Or is there another step?

Thanks.

After some research, I now see I need to install "Super User". How do I go about that. Is this the only thing I need after unlocking the phone with HBOOT to install Barnacle?

I will assume you are on HBoot 1.50, if yes I would strongly suggest you read this thread, http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...vo-3d-rooting-essentials-official-thread.html, read the section for HBoot 1.50 and let us know if you need anything else

I did in fact read that, I just wasn't sure what ROM I needed to get SU. So after unlocking the boot with HBOOT, if I install this ROM: [ROM] ~~~ Stock 2.08.651.2 With HTC/Sprint Spyware Removed (10/2/11) ~~~ - xda-developers

I should be able to install barnacle, correct?

Yes, but that thread tells you how to flash the SU app, once you have that then you can use Barnacle

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something; is the SU not within that rom? What about the first question regarding backing up texts etc before the HBOOT unlock?

Sorry to keep asking, but thirdly, if I am just installing this "close to stock" rom, do I need to use something like Nandroid? I googled nandroid but then found stuff on the clockworkz mod etc; and it has become even more confusing. I have MyBackup PRO, can I successfully restore the phone to stock with this program?

No, once you root, then you have to install the SU app, once you have that, then you can use a recovery image, and that will allow you to create a Nandroid, depends on which recovery you would like, CWM, or TWRP, watch the video it will explain all, this will make you understand what I am talking about. Oncde you have your recovery, then you can back up your Stock ROM and either stay like that, or experiment with different ROM's and you can always come back to your stock rooted ROM

Thanks that's helpful. I'll let you know if I have any other questions!

I am on HBoot 1.4 so I do ot have your issue, I believe on your HBoot version you need to flash the Superuser app, hopefully someone with HBoot 1,50 will chime in here to help you out, I don't really follow the process much for HBoot 1.50, I was simply trying to guide you on the right direction.

One just came up. I downloaded that ROM posted above and was looking through the files. Where do I find the SU app?

Great to hear, If I may suggest something, you may want to post what you did to get it finally working, this way who else in on HBoot 1.50 and want to root will read this and hear it first hand from someone that went through the experience, rather than us trying to explain it from reading elsewhere on other tutorials when we are not actually on HBoot 1.50. Much easier since now you have been through it first hand. ;)

I found a few good tutorials and figured it out! Have wifi tether working and everything! Thanks for your help.

Not sure if you meant in a new thread or in this one, but regardless this is what I did:

1) For $3.00, go to the market and purchase "MyBackup PRO". The HTC root method will erase everything from your phone and revert it to factory default. Use this app to save all of your contacts, texts, etc.

2) Once you have backed up your data, follow this tutorial STEP BY STEP HTCdev - Unlock Bootloader (you'll have to make an account quickly first). These steps will unlock the bootloader. As a reminder, it may void your warranty so be careful in your consideration. I have Sprint's total equipment protection (TEP), and after extensive research I found it will not void that warranty.

3) Now, you have your phone unlocked, but you still need the SuperUser (root) permissions. Go here:
[GUIDE] HTC Unlock Hboot 1.50 + TWRP Recovery + Root + Flash!! [9.11.11] - xda-developers

This tutorial will do several things: leave your ROM stock (which I wanted), but still grant you superuser, and install a custom recovery, so you can "revert", if you will, to an old state on your phone if things go south. If you did your HTC Unlock as per the HTCDEV webpage correctly, you should have these three programs installed:

Android SDK
HTC Sync 3.0.5551
Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

You'll need them. Literally, follow each step after it lists those three files on the "[GUIDE] HTC Unlock..." page, and you will have a completely rooted phone.

Now, the only reason I wanted the root is for wifi tether. I have heard problems people have had with various tether programs and HBOOT 1.5 rooting, but I tried Barnacle just to start. It works perfectly.

Download Barnacle on your phone here: http://szym.net/apk/barnacle_latest.apk . And you should be good to go.

I was pretty "dumb" when first researching all of this; even though I am a web developer, mainly because there is SO MUCH information out there it's hard to pick apart what you need and don't need. My recommendation is search various threads (even not necesarily on this forum), and try to piece the puzzle together. This sure helps: http://androidforums.com/evo-3d-all...vo-3d-rooting-essentials-official-thread.html

Nope posting here is perfect, this way they can read your thread and your issues and what you did to get it resolved, well done and enjoy your phone.

Great job on the instructions, Ray-Ban! :) This will help a lot of people, especially by having all the links in one place and in order.
