Root [CDMA] Newbie to Android, HTC, and now Rooting Apparently!

Hey folks...newbie here. Recently, I bought a pretty new EVO 3D, not a scratch, for a great price. I've used it now a week and love it. I'm still learning Android, but so far I like it.

Last night I received an HTC update. It downloaded, powered down, and powered up with a yellow exclamation and the Android mascot. I pulled the battery and rebooted and everything's back to normal.

I was confused as to why it did this and started digging around...I ran across an app installed called SuperUser. I have no idea what it is at all or how to even use it. Some research online tells me it's an app to do with rooting. Great, I know nothing about rooting.

How can I see of my phone is still rooted?

And please help me with the answer...Should I keep this bastard rooted child left on my doorstep and learn to love it or should I give it up and do a factory reset?

Thanks in advance.

If you check the HBoot, you will see if you have SOFF, also if you have the SuperUser app in your programs, then most likely you are rooted. Would of been nice if the person that sold it to you told you. Now that you took the update, that may have unrooted your depending on which update you took.

FWIW Rooted is much better, but if rooted properly

OK, I know very little about rooting, but I know how to get it open from the power down screen. Here's what I see when I opened it...

Good, bad, indifferent? If I can learn to use this thing and I'm willing to stick with it and hold out for ICS coming up and I'd love to get some of this bloatware off of here.

Thanks for the help.

That is good, now go to your application drawer, and click on your Superuser app, and let us know if it opens up. My concern is that you accepted the update.

That won't tell you if your root is actually working, it'll just tell you the logs and permissions. Which may not show anything if no rooted apps are installed.

Download something that requires root access (like adfree) or download this:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck

That'll tell you if you have root or not. If you are rooted, I recommend you keep it. Read up on the reasons to root and what you can do with it and you may be surprised. If you accept any more updates, you're likely to get HBOOT 1.5 and it can be more of a pain to do stuff with root.

Not like any updates between now and the ICS update are likely to be anything really useful. And we don't expect ICS until Feb or March.

1.4 bootloader and s-off is a VERY good thing.
You can also download Terminal emulator - type su then enter
if # appears you are rooted.

If not - you need to Flash the Super user app in recovery.

Both Basic Root Check and Quick Boot asked for permission from SU.

I denied them since I didn't know what they would do.

Then you have root, you are good, just make sure you do not take any HTC updates from here on. Quikboot is a good little app, read the link I gave you, you will have to do some reading, and decide if you want to stat with the stock ROM you have or flash a new ROM, go into Menu/Settings/About phone and click on software info, and tell us what it says there

Here is a screen shot the software screen. I'm starting the reading now.

This is a very good practice.

Basic Root Check asks for Root permission, then checks your /system/bin and /system/xbin folders to make sure the SuperUser app is installed, and working, correctly. But if you get a prompt to give superuser permissions, it generally means it is working just fine. :)

Here are some apps you can check out, plus a short description of what they do.
