Root [CDMA] root trouble with HTC EVO 3D

grieva

Lurker
I'm trying to root my HTC Evo 3D (EMEA). I have installed official update (ICS 4.0.3). I tried some tutorials here and on xda-developers forum. Only thing in which I succeeded was unlocking bootloader with htcdev.com (I have unlocked bootloader, but there is S-ON and almost every tutorial is for S-OFF). I downloaded many recoveries and none of them worked. In console was everything ok and then after rebooting to recovery phone rebooted normally and turn on.

Do you know where to get recovery which will work or how to get S-OFF from S-ON what I believe could help?

Android 4.0.3
Software version 3.28.401.1

You will most likely want to get s-off. There have been a lot of problems with people being s-on and flashing ICS roms. However, some people have had luck flashing using 4ext Recovery Control.
Find that here: 4EXT Recovery

If you have already unlocked your bootloader you can use 4ext recovery control to flash the stock ICS rom.

or a custom ICS rom if you wish.

4ext recovery has had mixed reviews on it working for people with ICS so you probably want to gain s-off.

Head over to Unlimited.IO and follow their instructions on gaining s-off using the wire trick. There are also video tutorials floating around if you need one.

But if you have an unlocked bootloader try flashing a rom. Did you flash a recovery yet?

That's the problem. I was trying flashing recovery and in console it was ok, but in phone nothing happened. When I tried to reboot to recovery phone normally rebooted not into the recovery. So I'm trying to find some recovery which I can flash and get to it.

It's necessary to have recovery, only after that I can use the wire trick. Also I can't install any custom ROM because I don't have working recovery.

What recovery did you try to flash? Are you meaning that you can't boot into hboot? Turn off phone and do a battery pull. Then hold volume down + power. Once in hboot select recovery. Sometimes without the battery pull I can't get into my hboot either. Apologies if I misunderstood what you meant by can't boot into recovery.

Were you following the complete newbies guide to root?

Could the problem be that USB debugging isn't enabled?

After you htc unlock bootloader it factory resets your phone. You might have to go back in and uncheck fast boot in menu>settings>power

and also check usb debugging under menu>applications>development

Sorry I know the ICS menu options are laid out a little different than GB so it might not be the exact location.

I can get to HBoot. I have HBoot 1.53.0007, unlocked, S-ON. When I select recovery, my phone normally turn on, there is no recovery, even after flashing it sucessfully.

Let me see if I can get DonB in here. He knows a lot about flashing recoveries. He will be better equipped to troubleshoot this for you!

What happens if you run the command via fastboot?

fastboot boot recovery.img

Out of curiosity which recovery were you trying to use? Because the guide for CDMA and GSM here use two different recoveries. Please post what you used first and which one you used second so that other people can benefit from this info as well. :)

Sorry I wasn't able to solve your problem but I'm glad you got it figured out!!

I think James Rustles missunderstood grieva. I had the same problem with HTC EVO 3D (EMEA). The excellent guide "Complete Newbie's Guide to rooting and flashing Evo 3D ROMs/Kernels using fastboot" is written for the sprint version of the phone and in Step 5, the recovery-twrp-shooter-1.1.1.img recovery image doesn't work for some reason. The phone just waits for a while and the boots into Android as usual.
I followed grieva's tip and downloaded GSMEvo3DRoot.zip from here Download HTCEvo3D/rooting/GSMEvo3DRoot.zip at DownloadAndroidROM.com
I the extracted the cwm-4.0.1.4-shooteru.img recovery image and flased that instead. Then I continued following the guide. The phone rebooted into recovery and I flashed the SU patch and now has a rooted stock ROM HTC EVO 3D.
I think you should update the Newbie's Guide to reflect this.
Thanks grieva for the tip.

I will look into having the guide fixed to reflect that issue. I will have to do a little research first to make sure.

There are two guides. The first post in the guide is for cdma. The second post is for gsm. The gsm guide says to use cwm recovery. The cdma guide says to use twrp.

Unless I saw it after it was changed?

I did not changed anything. It is exactly as it was, if it is incorrect, please let me know before I correct it. I did not use that method of rooting since i am on HBoot 1.4 so someone please confirm as I have not kept up with this process. It looks right to me unless I am missing something. I believe you can use whichever recovery you want to flash, so 4EXT can be flash the same way I believe

It looks correct to me as well... Possibly he only saw the CDMA guide and missed the GSM guide? It says in pretty bold letters to see the second post for GSM.

Don I have been wondering about flashing 4ext through fastboot... Where would you find the .img file? They don't host it on their website...

I will see if I can find it, I know I did see it before, I will look around and let you know.
