Root [CDMA] Root without new ROM?

Hi,

I am reading as much as possible about rooting my evo3d, but can't see the forrest for the trees anymore ;-)

I have unlocked my bootloader using the HTC method with success.
The only thing I want actually is get root access and hace S-OFF. No need for a new ROM. The stock ROM and HTC Sense are just fine to me.
Is this possible at all, or do I HAVE to install a new ROM?

I live in the Netherlands, but ended up with an EVO3D from France...

Now that las one puzzles me, since I can't find anything about it.
Besides that, I would like to keep the option to choose Dutch language. Or is that default in all ROM's maybe?

I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I succeeded partially. I get an 'installation aborted'when trying to load the SU patch. It seems something can't be found. Don't remember what though :-\
Any suggestions?
 
Even with the error I seem to have rooted the phone successfully :-)
I can use titanium backup without the 'root needed' message, so it seems rooted. .......I think...

You get that error in Clockwork? I would make sure you have the zip file in the root of your SD card (meaning in no subfolders). And follow the quick guide to flash the SU zip. Maybe try downloading the patch again, to make sure your download didn't screw up.

I would suggest you find a ROM that's close to stock, or see if there is a stock rooted ROM out there and see if you can flash it. That just sounds funny that it didn't flash right but you have root access. There may be problems later.
 
Yes, in Clockwork (I think...thescreen from where I delete Dalvic cache, do backups etc. That's Clockwork, right?)
You talk about a 'rooted rom'. Does this confirm my idea that rooting also means replacing the rom?
 
Wow! I downloaded the same file from the same location and put it on the exact same place on the SD card and now it completed installation! :p

Yes, that's clockwork. And yes, it is replacing the ROM. But it looks like you're straightened out now, so if you ever feel like you want to change the ROM out with something different, it isn't hard and we're here to guide you.
 
So actually my stock rom has now been modified to a rooted rom, right?
And that rooted rom can be replaced by any other (compatible) rom.
I have some questions left now:

-Is there a way to get this rooted stock rom back after trying some other rom?
-Is restoring from a backup enough to get it back?
-When performing a restore after installing a new rom, will I have my old apps back in the new rom?

Ok...so to break down some of the commonly understood terms:

"Stock" is usually referred to a completely unmodified ROM. But once you root it with the SU patch, it's still considered "Stock". It's a little confusing, but that's the way the 'stock' ROM is identified. It's assumed to have super user included.

As for your questions:

Questions 1 and 2) Yes, if you make a backup or download the stock (rooted) ROM from somewhere on XDA. I don't know where it is for the GSM version, and I believe it varies between carriers.

And for 3, I'm not going to answer that directly, I think it's better to just fully explain what a backup is:

A backup (called a NANDroid backup by some) is where the recovery makes a backup of the /boot, /system, /data, and sometimes the /cache partitions. So, everything you had installed, every setting, the wall paper you used, etc. are saved. It's like taking a picture. Anything you installed or changed since the backup will be lost.
 
Ok, but even with your explanation I still can't figure out if the rom is included in the backup or not. I thought this backup was some kind of ghost image, including the rom but I am in doubt now.

Something else:
I would like to try the latest Leedroid, but the documentation says the phone should be s-off. Any use trying to flash anyway?
 
Yes, the backup is a ghost image. Sorry, I would have explained it like that if I had known you knew about imaging. The ROM, kernel, all of your settings, apps, etc are saved. I guess I explained it in a more technical way than I needed to.

As for Leedroid, make a backup, first. Then I'd recommend wiping your data partition (also known as a factory reset) before flashing. Leedroid works for CDMA phones that are S-ON / Unlocked. So I imagine it should work for GSM devices that are S-ON Unlocked. There's also a way of getting S-OFF for GSM Evo 3Ds.
