Root [CDMA] Rooting before or after ICS (Android 4.0)

Hay guys

I'm seriously considering rooting my E3D, but with ICS looming on the horizon, said to come in March to the EVO line, I'm wondering if I should root it now, if i waited this long might as well wait another month! Or should I go ahead and root now?
But then my question is: if i root, and ICS drops ? Will my phone auto update to ICS, which is unlikely and might even require me to manually download, transfer and install it on my phone..
Also, I would suspect ICS being locked and will have to do a root for it as well! But then, how common will a root for ICS be when it drops?

So if I'm correct, my options are as followed: Root now, have a hustle with installing ICS when it comes, root ICS if root is available for it.
Or..
Wait a month, autoupdate to ICS (clean original install, maybe even phone specific) find or wait for root, root if possible!

Am I on the right track here? And there's a matter of Sense 4.0 too :S
What to do, what to do?

Will appreciate any kind'a tips
THX

I would recommend rooting first.

Once the ICS update is released from HTC/Sprint, the rooted version of it will appear within a day, and then updating it yourself with the new rooted version is no big deal.

Besides, when you root, you'll also be installing a recovery package that will let you backup an image of the software and data you're running right now. Then, if there's anything flakey about the new ICS update, you can roll back to what you have working - this is rooting's strongest power.

BTW - due to your username similarity to supafly (same as yours without the special characters), you're now unable to view your own profile here, make changes or updates to your forum features and may have other woes as well.

I'd strongly recommend a name change (let me know what you prefer) if you want your forum use here to go the best for you. :)

About your answere: would you perhaps know if a rooted 2.3.4 will be able to autoupdate ? Or will I need to download? And if so, are the original OS's being released for download via PC's as ROM's ?
What I want to make sure is that, I get the original, not the original someone ripped from theire phone as a ROM and released it :)

If you root, you'll likely have to update manually. If the option to update over the air appears while you're rooted, you will lose root if you accept the update. You can just re-root later using the HTC unlock method, but in other devices that have gone through a major OS update while rooted have had problems. So manual update would be highly recommended if you run a custom ROM.

The cats providing roms are devs that are known, trusted and have a history with the community.

We provide links to the appropriate developer sites wherever there's an update.

Once rooted - never accept an over-the-air update.

PS - Name changed, off-topic discussion about that removed. ;)

I have been curious about this issue. I just flat out rooted mine via HTCDEV (hboot 1.5) With the stock rom and all, I'm just going to wait and see what happens. I created a Nandroid B/U before I tweaked it and the HTCDEV you can just changed the UNLOCK to LOCK. So if you can't OTA update it, flash it back to it was prior to doing the SU and all then just re-lock it.

That will work, especially if the ICS update includes new firmware (like a radio). But within hours of the patch hitting the interwebz, I'm sure one of the devs over on XDA will have a rooted version ready to download and flash, as long as you just want a pure stock ROM + superuser.

It doesn't bother me running stock everything and just having SU. But what the hay, this is Android and everyone has their liking, unlike a certain fruity phone.

I agree that stock + su is perfectly viable. On my first Android device, I had nothing but the stock ROM with SU and some root apps for a very long time. Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

As for the iPhone. Well, some people don't care about making their device...theirs. They don't mind what comes out of the box. And there's nothing wrong with that, either. Plenty, if not most, of Android users never utilize any of the customization that Android is capable of. How does that make them any different than iPhone users? For example: When I see someone else with a HTC phone, I see the HTC Sense weatherclock widget on their home screen. And usually it's an Evo 4G or a TBolt.

I don't mean to be callous or lecturing. I just used to hate on Apple products and have seen my own hypocracy because I acted like a smug Apple fan, I just chose to be smug about Android. So now I just choose to support Google products and choose not to support Apple products and leave others to make their own decisions without harassing them.

I'm in the same boat as OP. And I'm one of those people that just want stock + SU (I'll experiment more with time). I've some of the guides and all, but I'm still confused...

I saw a post where DonB mentioned "freeza's all in one firmware update" for 2.17.615.5 to get the "latest" files as the OP inquired about stock as well...

My main concern is removing some Sprint bloatware, tethering, and ability to backup data (when I eventually move to a new phone).

My current status:
Android 2.3.4
Software 2.08.651.2
Kernel 2.6.35.13-g84f8edd (8/5/11)
Baseband 0.97.10.0808
Build 2.08.651.2
PRI 1.24_003

I just recently got a OTA message to download OTA system upgrade 2.08.651.3

Also, how do I determine my HBoot version?

Thanks

If you're on software 2.08.651.2 with Android 2.3.4, you have HBOOT 1.5. You can double check the HBOOT if you want by turning the device all the way off (hold both volume buttons and power for 5 secs then hold vol down + power until the bootloader appears), but it'll tell you that you have HBOOT 1.5. So the freeza's update zip won't work for you because you have no way of getting S-OFF. The best you can do is HTC Dev's S-ON unlocked, which doesn't let you flash radios or other firmware without relocking and applying OTAs.

If all you want is to debloat, tether, and make it so you can use backup apps, it's up to you how much you want to update. You can take that OTA (and the one after it) and then root and you'll have all the updated radios and then have root. But I've heard that people have had a lot of difficulty unlocking with the newest OTA. So it may be better to unlock now, relock, then flash the most recent RUU, unlock again then flash a ROM with SU. I can dig up links if you don't know where they are, but I'm at work right now so internet is slow.

1.5... It figures. Sounds like a lot of trouble but probably worth the effort, right? I would greatly aooreciate it if you could post links and put me in the right direction. Does thus mean that I would have to install custom ROM or is there a stock ROM? I like the phone how it is now with the exception if sone if the lame Sprint apps and a few others. Would I have the ability to return ti phone to its current state like it is right now? As for updating my Profile and PRL, I would have to relock in order to upadate?
