Root [CDMA] Some help please. problem with OTA updates.

rrdoublet

Lurker
So first off, I don't quite understand the whole rooting process with phones. I fix computers for a living and the jargon I hear for phones seems to be a bit different.
Anyways, I rooted my phone with the HTC method back in november. I don't know exactly what I did as I followed a youtube video as instructions. I did it mainly to get tethering to work without having to pay for it. I have a stock +SU rom currently loaded on it right now.

The main question I have is what do you guys do about OTA updates? I've seen a number of posts saying never to do any of them, while some people say they do it with no problem. I personally have tried to do them a few times and every time is the same; It attempts to restart my phone and then gets stuck on this screen that shows the android guy and a blue sign with an exclamation point on it. (I can link an image if yall want). I have to take the battery out and restart the phone and everything boots up fine, except I don't think any updates installed. Today, I've had the phone ask me three different times if I want to install this security update...

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I've heard mixed results about updating to the newest OTA on HBOOT 1.5. Some can do it, some cant. So, assuming you still want to go through with it: The easiest way would be to re-lock your bootloader and apply the latest RUU (available in the top sticky of the forum) then re-root by re-unlocking and flashing a ROM based off the newest update. Like MeanROM.

Or the more confusing route would be to install the Stock + SU ROM then the kernel.

Is there anything I'm missing out on by skipping this OTA update? By the way, how is the ICS update going to work for us rooted users?

There are updated radios and various other firmware that seems to have improved battery life for some. Those of us that are using custom ROMs and kernels haven't noticed too much of a gain. But the gains over the stock ROM and kernel seems to be fairly significant.

ICS will work like this: When HTC releases their official ICS, the devs will get a hold of it and root the stock version of it and have it available for download within hours of release. If all you want is complete stock, then you download and install the stock ICS ROM + SU.

If you use custom ROMs, you have to wait for your ROM developer to update their ROM. Which depends on your ROM developer.
