Not only that but you also need to make sure the new carrier will add your ESN to their system, and it has to be a CDMA carrier.
Very few of them will. MetroPCS is the only one i know of. Cricket used to.
ATT / TMO are GSM so their out.
Verizon will not add another carriers ESN to their system so they are out.
Its not like unlocking a GSM phone and poping a sim card in there.

No, rooting and 'unlocking' the bootloader does not make it so you can move to a new carrier. CDMA technology (basically, all Sprint / Verizon phones) is not like GSM in that way. To transfer your phone from Sprint to some other service (MetroPCS or Boost - Boost may still do it...they're contracted under Sprint and Sprint doesn't usually give a flip), you need to Google search for "CDMA Workshop" and also Google for "flashing sprint phone for boost" (or metropcs). There should be instructions on the 'net to do this.

Be very careful when doing this. You have a chance of bricking the phone or making it incapable of making phone calls, receiving voicemail, and/or using data. Write down everything you change so that you can change it back. It is very, very important to make sure you can go back.
