Hello all, just have a simple question on the unlocking and rooting process. I have unlocked my boost moto g running 4.4.2 and I was aware that the phone would be wiped but will the same thing happen when I install CWM and then root it? The guide only mentions that unlocking it will wipe the phone so I was just curious before I proceed. Thanks

Flashing CWM and rooting the phone does not require you to wipe the phone themselves. However most people a) flash their new recovery(CWM, Philz,TWRP) and root immediately after unlocking it and b) they do these things to install custom ROM's (operating systems like Paranoid Android, Cyanogenmod, etc.). That being said, its crucial for you to get used to backing up your data and apps to ease the process. Its likely you'll try several different ROM's before you find the right one for you. Every time you flash a new ROM you need to wipe all user data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache. Wiping is no big deal. People here have become quite used to it and you will too.

After you unlock the phone
boot into fastboot and flash the CWM recovery img file
After that boot into recovery (from fastboot Vol button down, then power)
While in recovery which should now be CWM or Philz whatever you choose, have the SuperSU zip on your sdcard. flash that inside recovery and you'll now have root.

None of his should re wipe your phone only the unlocking procedure. Even though while in recovery I will recommend wiping the phone again and clean cache and dalvik prior to flashing your chosen ROM and Gapps.

If you are a rookie to this, I would recommend downloading the Moto Tool, it is a fantastic tool to help newbies in getting root and a custom recovery.

DO NOT FLASH IT TO BECOME A GPE, you will have an encryption problem and will have to return to stock, if you do end up having this problem, both tattoedgod and I have returning to stock methods posted in this forum.
