Root [CDMA] Wireless Tether not working?

Viper can use both. They unlocked Sprint's hotspot and included Wifi Tether. But Sprint's hotspot seems to be limited to 3G. Barnacle and Wifi Tether can use 4G.

Sprint hotspot will only do 3g on all ROMs with it unlocked right now, no one has coded around that yet.
Most people can only get barnacle to do 3g
most people can only get Wifi Tether to do 4g

Most people can only get barnacle to do 3g
most people can only get Wifi Tether to do 4g

That's how it works for me at current, although I've read this a few places now, and GoodAndEvo reports that you can get Wifi Tether to work if you essentially start up Barnacle in the background (only running, not tethered), then switch to Wifi Tether. Haven't tried yet, and while I'd love to have Wifi Tether do it all, the makeshift Barnacle for 3G and Tether for 4G will work for me for the time being.

So Wireless Tether will work with 4G only? I was under the impression it did not support the kernel on the EVO3D at all...

Currently I'm using Barnacle under 3G, but a 4G solution would be nice.

I can only speak for myself, but 4G works just fine with Tether for me.

Only 4G thought right? I couldn't get it to work with 3G (have Barnacle for that now), but never tried it with 4G.

My house is just outside the 4G area of Tampa or I would test it right now. lol

Correct. I haven't tried the little workaround on GoodandEvo the other day, but I used Wireless Tether for 4G, and Barnacle for 3G currently.

Yeaaaaa, wifi tether with infrastructure works on my 3evo! Props to the devs. I'm using 3.1 Beta 4.

The following is a rant about Sprints internet speeds. Feel free to not read on. Getting BLAZING FAST 3G SPEEDS! 500mbps down and 300 up! Thanks for nothing Sprint. Where's my 4g when I need it? Oh wait they stopped rolling out 4g. Damn it!

YES!!! I just downloaded the newest WiFi tether, WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.1-beta5,that was released just 44 hours ago.

It comes with an EVO 3D profile! Fired it up and Success!!! I was able to get my iPad to work fast and easy. FINALLY!

I rooted with HTC method last night so life is GOOD now.

I had the same problems with WiFi Tether working only on 4G even with the latest version (3.1-beta5), the unlocked (i.e. hacked) Sprint Hotspot only on 3G, and Barnacle not at all.

So I gave WiFi Tether some tough love... While I've uninstalled and re-installed it many times with no joy, this time I cleared data (via Menu / Settings / Applications / Manage applications / WiFi Tether / Clear data) BEFORE uninstalling WiFi Tether. Then after re-installing, now it's working on 3G or 4G... I can switch 4G on and off multiple times and it all works. I'm not 100% sure that the "clear data" thing was the silver bullet but I'm not going to mess with it any more since it's working now.

I'm not terribly optimistic that it will continue to work on 3G, but at least I know one way that it DID work and hopefully I could get it to work again if it fails.

FYI, here are the settings I'm using:

Version (latest on code.google.com): 3.1-beta5
Device-Profile: HTC Evo 3D
Setup-Method: Auto
Enable WiFi-Encryption: On
Passphrase: hey wait a minute I'm not telling you that!!!
Hide SSID: Off
Change Channel: didn't touch it
WiFi-driver reload: On (which was the default)
Enable Access-Control: On
Change Lan: didn't touch it
MSS clamping: On
Routing fix: On
Change preferred DNS: didn't touch it
Change alternate DNS: didn't touch it

Yep worked here also with the same setup, I use to always use barnacle but I figured I would give it a shot to see if it would work right out of the blocks. Thumbs up so far

Just curious, someone asked me if there was a wired tether app so they can connect their phone to a PC if someone doesn't have a wireless card ??

My ROM has that built in. If you need to I can pull the specific framework file. I forget what it is off the top of my head.

No thanks, someone had asked me about it, so I figured I would post it, I know I had with my Hero before

I Just Rooted my phone with the HTC method for unlocking the bootloader and it seems to have worked. I have Superuser controls.

My main reason for wanting to get root access is to use Wireless Tether or a similar program to utilize the wifi hotspot capability of the phone.

I installed Wireless Tether and ran it, but I get an error. When I open the log the third item is,

Works fine for me, but I am on HBoot 1.40, have you read this thread below and verify your setup to make sure all is right, and also make sure it set to HTC Evo 3D

I tried clearing the data then uninstalling, and re-installing Wireless Tether. The result is still the same error, 'Activating WiFi interface... failed'

I tried using two other apps with no success also.
Open Garden WiFi, which basically looks exactly like Wireless Tether. This app gave me the same error as the Wireless Tether app.

I tried Barnacle Wifi Tether and it won't work either.

Could all this have somethig to do with the HTC root, since I couldn't use the Revolutionary?

I'm trying to get this straight. The Wifi Tether available in the market is the one not working. I need to download the apk file from the link someone provided and then install it from my PC?

I'll have to wait till I get home to try this if this is the way I'm on my work cpu right now.

This is the one that is working. Just send this link to your phone via email, download and click install.

That is possible I am not sure, did you make sure you tried the WiFi tether beta version here >>>> android-wifi-tether - Wireless Tether for Root Users - Google Project Hosting

Thanks!! I had to turn 'Enable Access-Control: OFF' to get it to finally work. After following the description of settings in an earlier post and using this link to get the apk directly on my phone, it seems to be running smoothly :)!!
Thank you so much!

Access Control should work fine. You have to allow access after the initial connection. You will see a notification, drop that down and allow access. You only have to do it once.

Access Control is a neat feature. It's amazing to go into a public place and see how many people log into your network. They can't do anything unless you grant that mac address access.

Or your passphrase
