Help Changing avatar color on stock SMS?

Does anyone know how to change the color of each contact? I see the option for "multicolored" and "gray", but that seems to just put a random color. Any way to choose a color for each contact?

What SMS app is that

That's the message+ that came in the phone.

Only work around I can think of is to set the contact's photo to a photo you have taken of the color you want to use.

It's Verizon's Messenger+ from what I can tell

I use Google messenger , might be worth a look or textra is quite customisable too both from the play store
