Root Changing ROM

subsist

Newbie
I've just rooted my desire but I cannot seem to flash a custom ROM. I am in the process of making a titanium backup but I have read somewhere that the desire requires a security hack in order to install non-HTC approved ROMS. Does anyone have information on this or a guide to remove the security? I am looking forward to flashing the Cyanogen 7 mod.

The specific code is this:
-- Installing: SDCARD:update.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "bravoc" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "bravoc" || getprop("ro.product.board") == "bravoc"
E:Error in/sdcard/update.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted

Make sure you have your GoldCard inserted!
S-off?

In the last 2 hours i have rooted, s-off'd and installed 3 diff ROM's (recovering once thinking i lost contacts lol) and its all easy peasy......

Just make sure you have a nandroid backup to recover from.
My Desire has just had a well needed breath of fresh air!!!!!!
Loving it... Thanks Android Forums!!!! :)

Can you boot into hboot and tell me if it says S-OFF? Wait, are you GSM or CDMA? Who's your service provider? Can you also give me the link to the ROM you are using? It looks like you might be trying to install a CDMA ROM on a GSM phone.

Can't see anything about the op via the app but the error is what you would see flashing a cdma Rom on gsm or vice versa. More info please

In the hboot menu it says "s on". I have a sim card; does this mean I am on a GSM model? The phone is not branded so far as I know, but I am on vodafone in the uk if that makes a difference.

I read the guides and they seemed to suggest I didn't need a goldcard as I am not branded. My hboot version was 0.93 and PVT3.

Is there any harm in simply trying a GSM ROM or do I need to get to S OFF mode? The s off process looks slightly more difficult than rooting.

Or will using amonra be more appropriate?

1. If you have a SIM card, you are a GSM.
2. Make a goldcard, it will be worth it if you ever need flash a branded RUU.
3. You will need to use a GSM ROM, the CDMA ones won't work for the obvious reasons(I recommend Oxygen 2.1.4)
4. S-OFF is a piece of cake
5. Clockwork will be fine with that hboot and PVT.

Does that answer all your questions thus far?

Very well. *thanks*

Do I need to make a goldcard, turn s off then flash the new rom (in that order)? Or have I simply been using the CDMA rom on a GSM phone?

Why would I want a branded RUU out of interest?

I already made titanium and NANDroid backups, gained superuser access and installed clockworkmod. Any other prerequisite recommendations?

1. You have simply been using a CDMA ROM, on a GSM phone.
2. Not sure :D Everyone else makes a goldcard so they can use a unbranded ROM. I just always tell people to make a goldcard ;)
3. Nope, looks like your pretty on top of things. Just remember to ALWAYS nandroid before flashing ANYTHING :D

You don't need to S-Off to flash a ROM.

If your phone has no Vodafone software or any mention of voda (e.g. on splash screens when booting) you may well be unbranded. Did you buy it SIM free, or from Carphone Warehouse (who use unbranded handsets)?

But there's been a change to the goldcard business for people who decide to S-Off. If you use the new (as of a couple of weeks ago) AlphaRev HBOOTs you can flash any RUU without a goldcard - the AlphaRev modified HBOOT does what the goldcard does (according to them - I've not tested it!). The flip side of this is that if you want to use an RUU to return entirely to stock, you need to flash AlphaRev's "downgrader" HBOOT first, because the new ones will not be replaced by an RUU. So whether this is a pro or a con depends on why you want to flash the RUU, but it does mean that the golcard should be less important for those who S-Off, though still useful for those who do not (and maybe a handy fallback anyway).

In any event, remember that AlphaRev is only for GSM (AlphaRevX, however, is a different story...).
