Help Changing text color/layout?

I just got the Infuse and I recently had the Captivate. I don't like the color of the stock text bubbles, as in the captivate, grey bubbles were failed messages. So, grey bubbles on the Infuse keeps making me think that I have failed to send messages.

Is there a way to change it without downloading 3rd party apps? I guess I could use handcent, but I was curious if it's possible without.

Ive never seen the option to change the colors in messaging...

With custom roms, you can definitely change it. Mine are orange for incoming, and blue for outgoing. You have to be rooted though.
