Charge every night VS wait until almost dead?

I've never been one to use my phone that much. One or two calls, 5 or 6 texts, look-up some map stuff, check some email. I'm used to phones where the battery goes below 20% by bedtime so I have always just put the phone on the charger every night.

Now I am using my phone more and more, like using it to play music via bluetooth to my car stereo on long drives... But this M8 is crazy efficient! I have yet to see the battery get below 70% by bedtime. I could probably go 3 full days before seeing the battery get close to dying.

So is it ok to plug my M8 into the charger every night even though the battery says 75% still remaining? Is it bad for the battery? Should I run it all the way out (or almost out)?

Over the life of the phone you will not notice a difference in battery performance. Both battery and charging technology has improved considerably over the past 5 years, resulting in less impact on battery life due to different charging cycles. The lipo battery in your phone will last you several years even while charging it from 70%.

In older batteries discharging almost to 0% could actually have an even worse effect, causing a phenomenon known as "reverse charge" where one of the cells actually loses its capability of holding a charge.

You used to have to recharge batteries using a special charger to avoid a "memory" effect caused by older battery types such as NiCd and NiMH

So in answer to your questions, charge it as you desire, you will not adversely affect the battery no matter how you charge it as long as you use a good charger.

i normally charge mine every night but is usually from around 40% - sometimes more if ive had to charge it earlier in the day

I usually go 2 days without charging, unless for some reason on day 1 I am below 50%. Everyone else above has already said the battery technology stuff, so charge as you want.

I've been waiting until the last minute to charge - mainly to see how long the battery can go between charges. Twice I've misjudged and run the battery to zero. So from what is said here this will not hurt the battery?

I normally charge full every night, rarely let it drain out. Never had any problems with batteries as a result.

I charge it every night when I go to bed regardless of how much battery I did or did not use during that day.
