Charging adapters

Hi all, I've just purchased a spare charging adapter off ebay - I need two really, one to keep at work and one for home. The ebay charger was advertised for the SGS2.

However, the official charger is 5.0volt 0.7Amp

The ebay charge: 5.2volt 0.45Amp.

The ebay charger works fine, but expected the above figures to be the same. Do you think this will cause a problem?

Hey mate, the charger will be fine.

The original charger delivers 3.5 Watts
The ebay charger delivers 2.34 Watts

The battery can handle up to 5 Watts without risk of damage.
It will take a bit more time to charge is all :)

Ok, thanks. I wanted to check, and it's only really used in case I need a quick charge so keep it in my work bag (don't read briefcase).

I just bought microUSB cables, as a usb socket is available at work.
I also bought the USB car adapter + cable so i have power in the car.

Yeah, I got the car one too. That works fine.

However just playing around with my phone with this ebay mains charger plugged in, it makes the touch screen go slow. Maybe because the phone reverts to running off the power, and it's not as high as should be?

It will actually charge your phone better than the stock charger, though it will take longer to charge, but at the same time the charge will last longer. This will also extend the life of your battery.

the charge wont last any longer, it may extend the battery life and will also take longer to charge but thats about it.
One thing you may find is that if you are playing games while using the 0.45amp one your battery may still drain, albiet slower.

You do get a better charge from a slower charge, it's a downside to Li ION batteries. Charging faster creates a hotter charge so to speak, thus decreasing the charge capacity of the battery, slower charge = less heat, which = longer life on the charge.

ahh, i did know that getting them hot wasnt good for them.
Would that mean that if you got a replacement battery cover that was copper would be a good idea to help cool the battery?

Cover material may or may not make a noticeable difference, i would have to run the tests. Temperature related degradation begins at about 86 degrees F.

So basically the warmth of your pocket can do that? (86=30c and body temp is 37c)

Absolutely, if the battery remains in a temp above 86 degrees f for prolonged periods of time, it can have a negative impact on performance, leaving it in your car on warmer days is a big no no as well. open space at room temp will work fine.

How about using a 2.1Amp charger? I have a cigarette lighter charger with a 2.1amp usb port. I am sure though that 2.1amp would maintain or increase the charge while using gps and streaming music constantly, but is it safe?

Haha, that would sustain more usage, but i don't think it would be safe to charge with that many amps, i think the max on most is like 1.5a or something, i could be wrong though.
