Charging - best practice

Hi folks,

I was wondering if someone could give me a little advice. I have the new Nexus 7 (2 days old and counting!) and I was wondering how it (or at least the old) likes to be charged. I know some things like to be run to almost empty before putting on for a full charge and others like to be kept topped up.

The Nexus 7 - like all devices that use rechargeable Li-Ion batteries - should never, ever be allowed to run to dead. It's not only bad for the battery but in the case of the N7 can make it very hard to recharge.

Best practice for all Li-Ion batteries (but especially the N7) is to charge often, no matter the usage. Don't let it get too low - if in doubt... charge it; it will cause no harm and may save you a lot of grief

Unlike NiCad batteries used in older equipment, Lithium batteries used in modern devices don't have a "memory" so they can be kept topped off without issue. Lithium batteries do not like to discharged completely.

The "don't let it run dead" advice does not apply to most electronics like these. Phones, tablets, laptops, etc. all shut themselves off long before the batteries reach damaging levels.

While it's true that you shouldn't run Lion batteries completely down, the tablet won't let you do that - so don't worry about it.
