I charge my phone and it's showing fully charged but when I remove the lead from the charger the charge drops immediately to less than 10% and tells me it's critically low. This doesn't happen every time I charge the phone so wondered what causes this.

Different chargers are made with different voltage output. When you use a different charger with a low voltage it takes longer for the battery to get fully charged. My guess is you used a different charger to charge the battery and that is what makes that difference. If that's not the case, then you battery is experiencing a slow death.
