Chat rooms>forums>?

This is sort of a generalized question. It seems online communities started with generalized chat rooms, and now its into forums which are more on a specific subject (I.e. phandroid) so what would everyone suspect is next in the lines of online communities and online interaction and meeting new people? One would say it has been facebook, but I'm meaning meeting new people and a whole community. What do you guys think?

I wrote this thread out of just random wonder. Online communities rule *fistpump* and they won't die obviously but just wondering what ill be searching for next. I remember back in the day lookin for skateboarding chat rooms... And now forums, some of which allow logging in with fb, this is what I'm seeing as next, which is pretty obvious lol

what about google hangouts? everyone has phones now that has front and back facing cameras as well as laptops and pc with web cams......not sure how that would fly as most of you guys>>>>i'm not to sure i want to see what you guys look like

Lol! But then people may would have assumed Skype would take over.. which it sort of did. So that would be an interesting one to check since you don't have to use a cam for hangouts lol
