Cheap headphones for the Z1

Hi

So received both the Roxfit case (Desert Tan) and my Z1 today, brilliant timing, yeah for me.

Cheap headphones for the Z1 ? I don't require the expensive ones that Sony recommend.

I was looking at some cheap Sony ones here

I tried some Nokia ones but the Z1 said they were not compatible. Would some of the cheap Sony ones in the above link be ok? I assume their own headsets would be compatible?

I only need them for radio and some music, nothing fancy.

Thanks

I assume by compatible you mean that the various buttons work to pause, FF, control volume etc. Unfortunately, chances are that they won't be compatible - whatever 'they' you choose - unless they came with the phone.

For reasons best known to themselves, Google did not specify standards for earphone controls thereby instantly killing any chance of an Apple-like aftermarket in Android-compatible devices.

It's a total PITA, basically.

Most headphones with a mic and buttons will handle basics like hanging up and stop/start of music playback but anything beyond that is extremely hit and miss. I read about one set of headphones that had program-able keys that you could educate to work with your phone - kinda like a universal remote - but they were expensive and the reviews were mixed.

If I were you*, I'd go for the best set of in-ear headphones I can afford (in-ear makes a world of difference - once you've tried it you won't go back) and learn to live with having to control volume etc from the phone.

There's one other consideration - sensitivity. Some headphones will drill holes in your head at medium volume, while others - in the same phone - will be barely audible at full volume. And there's a really wide range, and it has nothing to do with price. (Some of the best in-ear phones I ever had were Radio Shack specials for about $3.

I currently have 2 pairs - sorry, but they're so old (and so am I) that I can't tell you the make - that are pretty good-sounding, and I never pay more than US$10 (about 6 GBP) for headphones. My wife swears by the ones she paid $15 (about 9GBP) for. I'd tell you to look in Walmart, but I don't know whether they've invaded Ireland yet.

Of course, being 71 and needing hearing aids (over 100db loss in one ear at 4KHz), I'm not looking for enough sound in my ear to fill a stadium, the way some younger people are. But I hear everything I'm listening to (even if I have to crank the balance control all the way over).

Didn't you get earphones in the box? I thought they came as standard.

They're a bit flimsy, but do a fairly good job at isolating outside noise and have enough punch for me.

I take them to the gym with me and use these for everything else: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004NROUSE/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Look on Play for something like Jays Headset control or Degauss is pretty good by all accounts: http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...vorite-music-player-app-to-a-whole-new-level/

No, none in the box, which I thought was a bit mean. Still, at least the handset AND charger were both in the box :D

I don't need anything expensive, I will be mainly using these on train (commute to work).

Cheers for the pointers...will check them out.
