What we really need is an alternative site that we could gather if necessary. I don't know what Rob has up his sleeve. I'm certain the site isn't paying it's way. He obviously lacks great interest in the place or he would be a regular or at least somewhat active. I do think he has a care about the site and he had hopes of it rising again to some level of popularity with the name change etc. I'm glad we still have the site. For how long is the big question.
Strictly as backup...

Take a look at WhatsApp. I've used it for texting and calls with our daughter in Germany. Works great. It's free and I believe encrypted.

Interesting feature (haven't used it yet): I just explored the Communities feature, which allows you to set up group chats with subforums/topics, which maybe, if we're lucky, could handle Funny Pictures, Dog Days Afternoons, etc. 😊

I defer to the experts and Mods here.

I have no desire to jump ship. I wish Rob would log on so we could discuss the future of the site. I asked Nightangel to ask Rob his intentions. If he replied, the future wasn't shared. Another site will lack the vehicle of helping each other, and others if allowed to join, over the rough spots in our electronics. I'm not sure how long we would survive with just sharing memes. With that said, I was bored to tears without logging onto AF.

Take a look at the Communities feature. It allows 100 "groups" within a community. So while it can't replace a fully functional forum, it does seem to allow for a cheap imitation.

Yeah, I wasn't looking for a new home for the club, just a backup vaguely resembling the community here with sub-groups. Thanks for checking it out. There are probably other possibilities that more savvy types know about.

yeah i will pass on telegram. there is too much disinformation there. reddit is a great forum. and you can create your own community which makes it perfect to at least have a backup to be able to communicate with folks that are still on this forum. i do not post there, but i have gone on there for info and inspiration.

How about getting Rob to give up the controls/bills to someone ?

domain registration/hosting services, IT help is not cheap, but can be funded via membership donations.

I am not sure what platform this site is, but it can not be much different than any of the others, to keep it maintained and running.

It took me some time to figure out that I joined six plus years ago. :) It's good to have a place that we can land if the fruit cart is upset. If push comes to shove, we as a group can then decide what and where we want to hang out.

Probably better to start a separate group as it will be more social than technical, so us plopping down in that one might be intrusive.

Although, looking more closely the activity in that group is mostly years old so it may not matter that much.
I think the site has been dormant for some time. If it's not the place we are forced to inhabit, it will suffice as a gathering place and launch site for our future.
