Checking Data Usage

So with all the talk about Verizon's tiered data plan, it got me wondering how much data do I use on a typical day. Does the EVO 3D provide for a data counter somewhere in the menu?

Pretty sure there's service menu that does that. Meaning - if it exists, too hard for me to remember.

Try instead:

  • Call *2
  • In My Sprint menu, tap My Account
  • Tap Manage your Sprint Account (you can set browser to remember you) and sign in
  • Tap Phones on account
    • choose phone if more than one, choose view usage

Sounds hard but just remember *2 and My Account and the rest will kinda be obvious after you do it once.

You can try this one might be what you need, Network TrafficStats Lite - Android app on AppBrain and/or 3G Watchdog for Android | AppBrain.com

I've been putzing around in the battery stats and noticed with the new Gingerbread battery graph page you can select individual items that have been using the battery and see details about each one like how long they were running for etc. If you select internet it shows the CPU usage statistics and data statistics - data sent and data received.

So there is a way to get little snapshot of your daily data usage without using a third party application. The shortfall with this method is that it is resets every time you restart your phone. And who knows how accurate it is (includes 4G I'd bet). But it can give you a rough idea of daily use, and you could extrapolate it out for a rough estimate. Or you could start logging your daily totals for a week or month. I suspect there is a report kept somewhere in the phone, it just doesn't seem to be accessible to the user. Unless it is hidden, kinda like how you can see the total # of calls placed and duration in hours of calls made, via the service menus.

I just wanted to chime in with somewhat of a rough way I found by accident to find your daily data report. It's not as pretty as an application but it gets the job done. ;)

Follow this path on your phone: Tap Menu -> Settings -> About Phone-> Battery -> Battery Use -> Internet

I have used 3G Watchdog, like DonB recommended and it works well. It is a nice app and simple to understand and set up.

There are a couple others out there too and this one actually shows your network usage on a per app basis, which I liked: Network Usage | AppBrain Android Market .

Used to be able to see that on Spare Parts - now in Spare Parts+ it won't display that page, saying there's a kernel issue with that.

Downloading now to try - seems to work on the 3vo as you say. Nice!
