CheckROM V6 kernels?

Hey guys!

I flashed the new CheckROM Revolution V6 yesterday. My phone reset itself for no reason last night so I decided to start using a custom ROM, thought it was a good time for a fresh start. So I flashed CheckROM Revolution V6 and so far i'm loving it!

The question I have is I was going to flash Siyah kernel but I see lots of people using N.E.A.K kernel. I know they are both different and there is no "best kernel" but what one is most popular and which do you recommend? Or is it best to keep the CheckROM stock kernel?

Also as I said i'm running V6, just to confirm if it's stable and everything, is it the best one to be running or should I maybe use V4 as it's been out longer?

Really sorry for the noob questions - Thanks in advance :)

If you go into KitchenPro (comes with checkrom) in your applications list, you can download and flash these kernels super-easy. Make sure you have the latest version of KitchenPro from the market too

I tried Siyah for a couple of days on Checkrom 4 and it seemed a little bit smoother, but battery life was about the same for me. Everybody will have different experiences so you should just try them out for a week or so each and judge.

No harm in trying, if you don't like one you just switch back, it's not a hassle like changing roms

I just flashed Checkrom 6 this morning so still using cf-root, I think I will put Siyah back on as I only tried it a couple of days before installing CR6 today..

I haven't tried NEAK yet, to me it looked more like a kernel for people who want to micromanage settings? Not too sure. I kinda just want something fairly generic with optimisations.

Yeah me too, just flashed Siyah :) if i want the one back CheckROM came with (CFRoot?) where do i get it from, is it on the kitchen as well? i mean is it the same one?

yup, u can flash back to cf with kitchen pro. I got my first sleep of Death today with v6 and siyah 2.6.12. no mods to kernel. never got one single sod with siyah and check v4.

Hey, i have a few questions please.
Firstly, if i flash a different kernel, CWM tells me that im not on CF's kernel and that some of its options are disabled, isn't it a bit risky? if i want to use my nandroid backups, isnt it a problem?
also, if i flash N.E.A.K or siyah, i know i can optimize my phone with overclocking and stuff like that, but i want to take things step by step, and not play with it yet, my question is - will flashing the kernel, without playing around, improve my performence or battery, or is flashing a kernel just a basis for further optimizing?
and last question - what is a sleep of death? how bad is it?

Thanks :)

You can just make your Nandroid backups through CWM (as in the recovery mode, not the app CWM Manager)

Different kernels affect different phones in different ways (different much?) For example, I myself haven't had as much luck with Siyah kernels as with NEAK. I found NEAK did very well to keep smoothness when clocking 100-800Mhz whereas I found Siyah would stutter, whereas others wouldn't have that same problem. You'll never know until you test them all yourself.

As for your last question, I'm not too sure. But whenever I had SODs I just reboot the phone and changed whatever the last thing I did that caused it (if I'm lucky enough to identify what it is) and it's usually fine after that.

just answered a question i was about to ask, i seem to get some choppyness since flashing siyah, i might give neak a go :D

That didnt answer my question, so ill try to make it easier to understand.
Im trying to figure out what kernels do, and im not sure if flashing a different kernel will make the rom run in a different way, or is it just something you do in order to be able to o/c and stuff?

Does it make the phone have better capabilities by making the operating system better, or does it just open a door for optimizing?

And i know each phone will act differently, so don't mind that…

Thanks

Your kernel is how your ROM interfaces with the hardware. By flashing custom kernels, this will affect how your hardware resources are utilised.

I'm not sure what you mean by running in a different way though? There are features that custom kernels allow you to enable like custom boot animations and back light notifications. The ROM will pretty much remain the same.

In short, the kernel is mostly about optimising performance. For whatever reasons - faster speed at the cost of battery life, better battery life at the cost of performance, or whatever balance of both in between.

So guys Siyah or NEAK. Just your OPINIONS?

Forgive me for saying so... but a pointless question as you, yourself, will have to try both of them out with your phone and your phone's configuration before you can say which is, "best", for you.

It doesn't matter what I, or anyone else says about a kernel... all that it tells you is what works best on our own handsets, configurations and usages.

Since it only takes a few moments to flash a kernel... why not give both of them a go and see what suits you best.

I can but I don't know what's best cos I don't know what I'm looking for?

Well, as you have discovered, the popular custom kernels are Siyah and N.E.A.K..

So guys Siyah or NEAK.

Now it is a question of trying them for yourself as no one can say which will be best for you in terms of performance and battery life with your usage and app's.

I've been using Siyah now for a while. When I was on cognition S2, and now as I am using Checkrom V6. Flashed Checkrom a few days ago, and flashed Siyah on top immediately, mostly because BackLightNotification (BLN) is supported. I never had a problem with the Siyah Kernel. And as others already pointed out, YOU have to flash and test. But if the kernel you are already using works for you and does what you need it to do, then leave it. Don't try to fix things that aren't broken.
