Where are all the cheap Chinese smartphones and PC's? With the popularity of Chinese tablets, you'd think we'd see more Chinese smartphones and PC's available.

I think there ARE a lot of chinese phones too. Apart from the legit respected up-coming chinese phone manufacturers, (zte, huawae etc) theres a lot of generic things and clones doing the rounds

Actually there's plenty available, in fact too many sometimes. Although when it comes to Chinese PCs, I always stick with Lenovo. And for smart-phones it's generally best to stick with brands you might have heard of, like Lenovo, Huawei, ZTE, Oppo, Hisense, Coolpad, Xiaomi.

When considering one, it's definitely worth reading our forum sticky about these things...

Really they are mostly all Chinese PCs & Chinese phones.

So I don't know what you mean.

I mean like those low-end Chinese tablets (Dragon Touch, Hisense, Visual Land, Nextbook, Ainol, etc.)... Where are all the equivalent low-end Chinese PC's?

You mean like really cheapo unbranded/off-brand and crappy PCs?...ahem PCchips and Packard Bell  I don't think they really make them any more. Even in China, just about all PCs are coming from reputable brands, like Lenovo, Haier, Great Wall and Founder. China Inc. has turned its attention to making and flooding the world with cheapo and crappy and often counterfeit Android devices now. Markets and demands change. Years ago China(Hong Kong) was flooding the world with crappy cheapo transistor radios, they don't do that now.

I visited Shenzhen a few months ago, and I did see that just about all PC components, like mainboards and graphic cards, were coming from what I'd call reputable manufacturers, like MSI and Gigabyte.

Another thing I think to consider, PC costs have become so low now and margins are extremely thin, it's not even worth trying to make an even cheaper one that crashes all the time. Whereas with something like Android tablets and phones, many main-brand decent devices can still be quite expensive with plenty of margin for profit, so there's plenty of people willing to pay $40 or so for one, and take their chances. For the price of one Samsung Galaxy S4 or Apple iPhone 5C, you can buy two decent PC laptops, and still have enough change for a cheapo tablet or phone.

I seriously want Mike's life lol! Wish i could write "so i recently visited Shenzhen" :)

:D

I used to live in Shenzhen for about 6 months, but eventually had enough of the place. It's only 34 years old, yet has a population greater than London. Before 1979 there was nothing there, except rice paddies and and a couple of fishing villages. Although I do have some very good friends in SZ. The original name was Shenzhen Special Economic Zone, basically the original founding and gigantic factory of China Inc or China PLC. :) ...when most of the manufacturing moved from British Hong Kong into Shenzhen and the Pearl River Delta area.

BTW Funky, I've only actually visited Scotland twice in my whole life. last time was 1986. :p

You havent missed much mate. More smack, more blades, still ruled by a conservative government that none of us elected :D:beer:

U
Packard Bell got into a falling out somewhere in the US so they no longer ship them here anymore

Packard Bell is a bit of a strange one. Currently it's a brand of Acer for the budget European PC market.

Originally it started out in the 1930s as a radio manufacturer. Some firm in Israel had the brand for a long time, for really cheapo PCs in the 1990s. That's when it became notorious. They bought the brand because it sounds very much like Hewlett Packard. Confuses people, think you've bought the decent HP when in fact you've got the crappy PB.
